I have to say...do you think Jakob has more daylight? It looks like he cannot close much faster than that. God, just thinking that Cram could close in 53 off a similar pace...that is crazy.
I've been thinking the same just now. He was pretty maxed out tonight. The only thing I can think may have given him a few tenths more if the pacer went a bit longer.
However, career-wise there's plenty of potential for improvement. He just needs lots of practice at the mile distance and he can run 3:45.
My son interns/trains/lives with Olli, Morgan, and Beamish and currently babysitting Gus, it’s all good there. It’s all hard work and coaching with Dathon.
Next mile for him will be next year, per a interview with norwegian tv. Presumably first at Pre then at Bislett, so I guess Bislett will be the venue for the next try.

I love Jakob, but it shows how good Crammy was in his pomp. Realistically, the shoes and the lights are worth an extra two seconds, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Bislett track has been relaid since 1985 and so is presumably a bit faster. Crammy likely could have run at least a second faster than he did that night too. Jakob is demolishing the Africans, and yet he's still not quite at Cram's peak level. Of course, Jakob still has likely several years of improvement.

Bummer if that means he skipping Monaco (has a non-DL mile). Perhaps he’d run the DL 3,000 instead.

It's still super early in the season, everybody!
Honestly, Jakob ran a super unimpressive 800 meters last week and acknowledged that he wasn't even the favorite in that small-meet race. That alone tells me he's nowhere near his peak at the moment.
Perhaps he was sharper today than a week ago, but it can't be by much. He really wasn't much faster today than at Pre last summer (in less ideal conditions).
So we're comparing Cram on his best day ever vs. Jakob on something that's clearly far from his best day ever.
I agree that it's a reminder of how fast Cram was, but it’s equally a reminder of how fast Alan Webb was (no super shoes, all alone, etc.).

Right on about Cram. He was cruising the night of his record.
3:45 well within reach that night and a 3:44 doesn't seem unthinkable. While most distance records are time trials Cram made his record into a normal race.

Ah, that is interesting! Hope he will do the 3000! Maybe they will put up a big bonus and lots of pacers and a small field to entice him to go all out there.

You’re jumping the gun a little bit. None of the best Africans were in this race. He beat them handily at Pre (a mile does favor him) but they traveled from Europe/Africa to Oregon after a good deal of traveling/racing while he trained in Flagstaff. Suspect it’ll be a closer duel at Worlds/Commonwealths. Health will obviously be a key for Cheruiyot and tactics for Tefera and Kipsang. He is definitely the favorite but we’re all expecting him to be in 3:45.x shape or better then. Cram did get an advantage of 200m more pacing. He ran 54.2x the last 409 and that’s a pretty sick performance. Jakob was 57.0 but did have to take on that extra 200m from the front in 28 seconds flat. I think this new era does affirm how great the 80s Brits were, on that we agree.

How many Africans have beaten Jakob in the last couple of years over 1500/mile? I can name one...and he lost to him in Tokyo and will likely never beat him again.
Everyone is drooling all over the 1985 Cram right now, but I think it's worth noting how much outright frontrunning Jake does, and how he runs the kick out of everyone, meaning he doesn't need a 53 to win.
Further, I'm not sure Cram would turn a 53 with one to go at the paces we see in today's races.
Records come and go. I'd rather see Jake win all the Olympic titles, as has been discussed.

Didn't Tefera beat him at World Indoors? Granted Jakob had COVID. Still, Tim C. beat him right after the Olympics right?

Great fitness from Klecker, but he'll learn from that and improve tactically. With 3 laps to go I thought he did way too much swinging wide and yo-yo-ing around. Also started to sprint a bit early. If he can learn a bit more patience, poise and relaxation he is going to be a lot better than I could have thought.
Definitely seemed like he ran the farthest and was the first to complete 5000 actual meters.
