The Germans threw him in a concentration camp. He was released towards the end of the war so he could fight the Soviets. After WWII, he continued his anti-Soviet work and was eventually killed by the KGB
In the current climate of Russian involvement in the Ukraine, I could see how such a figure would be celebrated.
Fortunately for Ukraine there were enough people brave enough to resist, even at the cost of their lives. Fortunately they've had a steady supply of weapons. The crimes the Russians committed in the territory they were able to occupy are horrific, but what they were planning was so much worse.
