*Week 482*
Greetings 50+ers! Well, I said August was going to be a bust, and it was. I'll turn 61 this coming week on the heals of Mopac. Here's to hoping to get some inspiration and motivation.
Keep up the good work everyone....and now back to dealing with the chaos that is trying to conduct in-person/hybrid/online/trying-to-give-everyone-every-available-option/nobody-gets-what-they-truly-want higher education. Be Safe Out There!
All the Best!
Yep just ticked over to 61. My birthday pretty much reflected 2020. I worked the evening shift and got home 11.30 pm and was up at 5 am for an early shift next morning. So it wasn't a party hard sort of birthday. 2020 hasn't been a party hard sort of year really.
I changed my training pattern this week.
I felt I was wearing the body down a bit with the regular longish stuff. No races on the horizon so I moved to the path of least resistance.
Basically just more frequent shorter efforts.
Mon. 6.5 km run. 42 min 100 m. elevation gain. Then 48 min kayak, laps of the dam. Felt strong.
Tue. 6.5 km run. 41 min. 110 m elevation gain.
41 min mountain bike.
Wed. 6.5 km run. 39 min. 100 m elev.
42 min mountain bike.
Thu. 6.5 km run. 45 min. 150 m. elev.
40 min mountain bike in the dark.
Fri. 42 min road bike and 49 min kayak laps of the dam.
Sat. 11. 5 km sunset run. 76 min. 205 metres elevation gain, some steep hills.
Sun. A very wet 78 min. mountain bike ride, finishing in the dark.
M61, 5'11", 180 lbs
Goals: Return to fitness while managing knee issues, reduce weight, maybe race participation when/if races ever come back.
Marathon history: 2:40 (age 23), 2:56 (43), 3:07 (58)
AUG 23-29, 2020
Sun - Off
Mon- Off
Tues- 7.7 miles @ 8:34 avg (9:41, 9:07 ... 8:12, 7:38)
Wed- Off
Thur- 5.0 miles (9:23, 8:48, 8:44, 8:30, 7:41)
Fri - Off
Sat - 4.0 miles (9:31, 8:29, 8:19, 7:17)
TOTAL: 16.7 MILES
This was a continuation of my 3-day-per-week pattern of progression runs, and experimenting with increasing my "long run." So far, so good. Knee pain persists, but still tolerable without taking anti-inflammatory meds.
Closing with a 7:17 mile yesterday was exhilarating, especially considering I barely managed 7:30 in an all-out time trial only two months ago.
One positive thing about my repeated cycles of trying to "return to shape" over many decades, is the joy of seeing big and relatively rapid improvements. I imagine folks who maintain a high level of fitness, year after year, miss out on that!
Lucky -- I hope things settle down to a manageable routine, professionally, soon. It will be fun to track your fitness gains when you're training consistently again. And welcome to the "61 club" -- my birthday was three weeks ago.
Be well, friends. Happy running!
Happy birthday to mopac and lucKY!
This turned out to be another positive week despite having to back off a bit due to a brief return of triple digit heat indices early in the week. Also, my planned Thursday group run was deep-sixed by thunderstorms, so I got an extra day off. Some extra rest is not necessarily a bad thing. And the weather today turned more fall like...nice. I also had one day of solid fartlek which felt good. And the Covid related weight loss continues as today I hit a local minimum. Life is good!
Sun: 51’ CR; body wt ex; med ball routine
Mon: off
Tues: 41’ CR; swim; body wt ex
Wed: off
Thu: off
Fri: 52’ CR w/ utility pole fartlek (varied); body wt ex
Sat: off
Sun: 51’ CR; body wt ex; med ball routine
Best to most!
Happy birthdays to mopac and LucKY2b. My 70th comes toward the end of next month and coincides with my official retirement. Meanwhile I have been transitioning to that day by cleaning out my office Wednesday, and moving personal items home Thursday. I will miss the interaction with colleagues and clients, but not the daily commute. At least the last five months I have been able to work from at home.
The right Achilles and left quadricep imbalance has sorted itself out. I will continue to moderate my training next week. I expect my chemo port removal Tuesday will necessitate canceling my Wednesday hard day, and Thursday swim. It will be a good week to wrap up client calls, and the son and I plan to take another backpacking trip next week. Together, this will keep training consistently inconsistent. Nevertheless, I completed 25 Igy miles, with a bit more intensity Saturday.
Monday: AM- 2 miles easy/walk; 8 x 200m good swing / 100m walk; mile walk/easy; PM- 3 mile walk
Tuesday: 1,500 yards swimming
Wednesday: 2 miles easy/walk; 8 x 300m good swing / 100m walk; mile walk/easy; core exercises; weight training
Thursday: Off
Friday: 3 mile walk
Saturday: 2 miles easy/walk; 4 x 100m repetition @ 26, 24, 24, 23 / 20m walk; 200m walk; 5 x 600m interval @ 3:10, 2:57, 3:00, 2:55, 2:52 / 200m walk; mile walk/easy
Sunday: Off
Have a good week.

Birthday greetings to mopac and lucKY! My condolences on the teaching situation, lucKY. I really lucked out with my sabbatical timing.
Congrats to Charlie on keeping your streak alive!
I finished my 500 mile run summer challenge last week and have been searching for some new goals for fall. I found a local September 5k and an October 10k that are in-person races where the RD has already been permitted and I'm raring to go.
We're back Up North where the roads are flat and the temps are cool so running is a pleasure again. The plan is to stay a while since I don't start school until the end of January.

Long May You Run!
Happy birthday to mopac and lucKY! I had a modest week of 25 miles running and 2 miles paddling. I got my flu shot on Friday, and I usually get a 24-48hr reaction of sore muscles and feeling lousy from them.
M- 7mi walk and strides
T- 4 mi walk, 2 mile paddle
W- rest
Th- rest
F- 4 mi walk
S- 6 mi run on trails with my son (I was 0:25/mi slower and average HR was 15bpm higher than usual for the run after my Fri flu shot)
Su- 4 mi walk
Good running to all!
P.S. Just saw on FB that Dan King just set a new M60 mile record of 4:49.08. Wow!

wow indeed. i had chatted with him before the nashville race--i'd even toyed with the idea of flying out to help pace him since i've been getting desperate to race--and based on his previous efforts at altitude i knew he was ready to beat the record. but i'll bet even he's surprised he broke 4:50.
long con vs. short con: if given the choice at birth, would you rather have a 4:02 at 16 or a 4:49 at 61? while i'm hoping to break 5 in my 60s, based on how difficult it's gotten the last couple of years, sub 4:50 seems like a longshot--which i guess makes sense and why it's a world record...
for my own part, i took a couple of easy weeks as the school year started--i absolutely relate to the stress that lucKY refers to. normally the first week is exhausting as i get back into a groove, but the anxiety/stress level this year reminds me of my first year of teaching over 20 years ago. can't b!tch too much, though--i still gotta job, i'm still getting paid.
the downside of the couple of easy weeks of under 50 miles/week is that i still really tired, and with our current socal heatwave, i still feel like i haven't recovered. that said, i did produce a decent effort yesterday on a 4 mile tempo with the first mile at 6:15 and the last 3 under 5:35. had to cut it short (i would have normally finished a 5th mile aiming for 6 flat) because i was driving up to santa barbara for my youngest's last teenage birthday brunch. i'll finish my week at right around 70 miles if i get through today's longish run ok, before i sit back and enjoy stage 2 of le tour....

Allen1959, so good to see your continued progress!
SCgal, you were indeed lucky on your sabbatical timing. My husband is also on sabbatical this year and I’m so jealous! Today I get to wrestle with figuring out how to give my “learning disabled” student 50% longer to take his quizzes than everyone else in the class when I’m giving all of my quizzes online through our campus Learning Management System. These things used to be handled by a center on campus that would administer separate proctored quizzes and exams, but no more on-campus services—we professors are on our own. I do hope you get into some real in-person races soon. There’s no indication that there will be any in my area anytime soon.
old guy II, interesting what you say about the flu shot. I have never had one, but this year my university is mandating flu shots for everyone as a condition of having any access to campus. Since I have to work in my research lab, I guess I’ll have to get the shot.
Our severe heat wave moderated and the air quality from the wildfire smoke became less bad, but everything fell apart for me physically this week. Both my chronic Achilles heel and the relatively recent pain and stiffness in my hip and SI joint were suddenly much worse than usual. I climbed out of bed on Monday morning, hobbled to the closet, looked at my running clothes, turned around and climbed back into bed. Took the dogs out for a short walk but didn’t raise my heart rate all day. I felt like a complete slug. Tuesday through Thursday I got up, walked the dogs in the dark, got on the bike once it got light and spun the cranks for 1-1.5 hours. Pretty minimal, but I felt a lot better about having gotten out and done something. Friday I ventured out for a very easy short run, 5.5 miles. I had the usual generalized muscle soreness from the PMR or whatever it is, but there was no recurrence of the stabbing pain in my hip and my Achilles felt about as it usually does. I did another easy run of 7 miles on Saturday and then rode the bike 30 miles on Sunday. 12 miles of running (and about 100 on the bike) is a pretty sorry week, but it’s a lot better than nothing.
I still don’t know what manner of autoimmune disease I have. My symptoms are a really good match for polymyalgia rheumatica but my rheumatologist thinks I have ankylosing spondylitis, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear to me. The treatments are different, so it matters. I’m going to go for a second opinion which will likely require going all the way to UCSF, which is a 2.5 hour drive (or more) each way. I suppose I need to do it, though.
As I think I said last week, getting old sucks.
SCgal Thanks!

15 year old Charlie 4:02
59 year old Charlie 4:49
64 year old Charlie don't care;)
Mopac, I been doing the same more frequent but shorter efforts me likee too!
So I just replaced my daily RockStar Zero with my own recipe and it Rocks!
1 200mg No Doz , 1gram Taurine , Table Spoon of Monk Fruit and a squirt of lemon juice fill with carbonated water. Costs me 60 cents. Main reason is to get rid of sodium benzoate and sucralose .
7 days of 50 minute slogs some detail
3 days were super slow less than 100 beats per minute bpm
2 days medium slow 112 to 120
2 days fast slow 120 to 132
rhr 55-60 mhr 190
1 hirt 4x30 on the bike
1 400 in 74
1 mile 5:48 really enjoyed this one last lap had lots left so the focus on fast twitch over the last year seems to have worked.
Can't wait for 2001 Hayward Classic on the new track. Not sure what I am going to run but am leaning towards the mile. The mile is easy to run but hard to train for. The 800 is easy to train for but really hard to run and the 5k is hard to train for and hard to run;) Maybe I should try a 400!
Politics rock and hard spot not much of a choice.
good point, Allen. not sure I could replicate it at current age without getting very out of shape first, but I remember having a lot of fun during a comeback in my late 30's -- my times were terrible compared to late 20's, but improvement was quick, and the whole thing was fun. I seemed to have retained speed more so than endurance, so it was the one time in my racing career when I had a "kick" to deploy -- anyone going slow enough to be near me at end of race was at that point someone I could outrun in a sprint finish. Never before nor since.

amkelley - I'm so sorry to hear about your struggle with your physical problems. You are one tough lady and will get through this but it's important to know what you're facing. I'd drive the long distance to get that second opinion in a heartbeat.
Extended time for testing is usually an option for individual students under most LMS. I know Moodle allows it. You can check with your ed tech person to see if yours does. It sure was a life saver for me last spring to have that as an option. Good luck!

I would think a 4:02 at 16 would be too much success, too soon. Few could handle it. Idaho’s sub-4:00 high school runner is no longer running just a few years post high school. He looked to be a good one.
Running well at 61 comes with hopefully more perspective. Whether one wants to admit it or not, more relevant for the participant, than society, or even family. My wife would rather have me vacuum, and clean my book shelf than notch a master’s record. Sure she gets enjoyment from my happiness, and me from her respect.
On a related subject, I tossed my training logs from 2002-2016. They seemed irrelevant to my age 70 self, as my age 19-20 training logs to my age 51-58 training logs. Besides I needed to make room in my home office for items from my former work office. If I died tomorrow someone from my family would ask themself “what was he keeping this for.”

I subscribed once I realized I was getting a lot out of it. I prefer Jonathan's brand of journalism to the others. And I get a free sub to Clean Eating, woot.
This week Kid Coach and I broke the old rule "if the workout fails, move on." We repeated a LR + 4x1mile tempo that I bonked just last Sunday. Today it was like a whole new me. I cut down the easy miles to 7 before the tempo intervals (last week I did 9 miles first), and I ran them easy as opposed to sub-7 which was dumb. I could've run 5K pace today I felt so good. So if at first you don't succeed...
Labor Day. Am I the only one racing here?

I tossed all of my training logs and race results in a fit of frustration around 1995 after 3-4 years of being unable to recover from the injury that knocked me out of serious running after qualifying for the 1992 Trials marathon. They would be utterly irrelevant to me now and I don't miss them. I did keep some of the nicer trophies and a few T-shirts from my glory days. I'd always rather look ahead than behind...
