The problem was that when I was in my first real track club around 8-10 yrs old, I was winning everything, including 100m and field events. They wanted to put me in the 800 and I even ran a few races, but I hated it—so I did short sprints/multis.
In hindsight they may have been right, who knows. Then again if I had juiced up like others, I might have been good in the 100, also. Eventually I wasn’t the fastest in the 100, multi training took way too much time, and when I went into the military it all fell by the wayside.
For the best, I think. Picked up again after military and in college/grad school, but was never again very serious about it. This is back in the stone age, when a real professional job was more important.
I always wonder about the 800, and I think I’m glad I didn’t do it, just in case I had been great at it—that might have changed my path in life, and I like very much the one I’ve had. I don’t think I would change it if I could.
