Alright. So, Mary Cain's form has always been pretty terrible.
But my heavens. What was THAT!? It was the most uncomfortable, unnatural looking stride I've ever seen. Like each step was pulling a foot out of a glob of wet cement. I know it's hard to come back from a stress fracture and run like you used to, but my goodness, she looked awful.

I don't see running as such a mental thing. She physically was not ready to run well. Being happy to be there would not have made her legs move any faster.
It's difficult to speculate what's going on. For someone who ran like she did in high school it does not even seem like the same runner anymore. People compare her to what she did as a teen, but at the time I would have expected her to run 3:55, or so, by now.
Cain needs to cut ties with the clown who is coaching her now. It is pretty clear he has no clue what he is doing and see if she can join the new group forming with former Syracuse coach Fox
Comebacks are tough. A guy in bib overalls beat me in a 10K once. I never surpassed my age 16 PR's and have never stressed about it. There weren't message boards back then.
As runners get older, there's more humility and a deeper appreciation of what being able to run means. I'm sure that's how Mary feels. She may never be able to run a last lap like her hair is on fire. How we grow as people is more important.

True. It's a wallop when it hits you, and it hits anyone who has ever taken running seriously enough. Mary just got hit in an unusually bright spotlight and at a younger age than most. Must be really tough. She seems really mature now, and even if she never gets back to her previous form or fulfills her early expectations, she should be respected for dealing with all the pressure on such a large stage and still trying for a comeback.
She needs to get into some Brooks and get healthy.

Looks like the two agents in Letsrun's pro runner salary article that guessed zero or probably zero for her 2018 income are wrong. She's still wearing Nike and using their slogan.
