Go train with Dave Scott or Cam Widoff or Tim Deboom for a week or two and then tell me they are mediocre. Dave Scott is closing in on 50 and I'll bet he can hammer anyone and I mean anyone into the ground. You also need to not look at it as 3 individual sports and as one all around sport. Look at the Olympic results, alot of those guys were in the 31 to 33 min range for 10k. Are they the best runners probably not but no one is claimimg that. It is absolutely incredible though that they run under 3hrs for a marathon after 2.4 in the ocean and 112 on the bike. Most of the excellent cyclists I know have a hard time walking after a century ride. And I'll state this again, I left triathlon for running mostly because the training to be a descent runner is much easier then the training to be a descent triathlete. I have been doing over 100 miles of running a week now for about a year and it doesn't even come close to the exhaustion that triathlon training brought me. Respect for what they are and that is pretty damn good runners after suffering on a bike and in the water.
