How tall is D'haene? I know Kilian is small, but sheesh!

Looks like a foot plus difference in their heights.
I'm curious what overall training they did the last 2 or 2 months.
Probably slower paces over longer much more mountainous terrain, closer to hiking mountains, without all the consistent high mileage that runners usually do.
Thus it's more strength orientated, vs cardiovascular & pace.
what happened to Sage?

6'4", 165 lbs according to Wikipedia
I am imagining having that guy swooping past on a trail...impressive. Tall guys are usually not as good on hills, but he is a beanpole.

Good doc about his GR20 Corsica record. 31 hours in the mountains.

This might have been the best high level ultra race ever!

Not sure but I think most of us can agree to stop expecting him to do well in this particular event. We should stop hyping a man who doesn't regularly finish in the top 50 of UTMB....
Still a great career in other races.

Dunno about D'haene but in the last 3 months Kilian has summitted Everest twice in a week and won the Mont Blanc marathon and Hardrock 100 for the 4th time so he's been putting in the effort ...

Currently 53rd with a predicted finish time of ~26:40.

Francois has such a special skill set.. impressive.
I'm gonna be honest and blunt and probably get hated on for this...
I follow Sage's channel, he is awesome and a great athlete, but he needs to get away from 100's this isn't his event and there is nothing wrong with that. He is a very dominant force in mountain races that are half marathon to 50miler more specifically in the 13.1 to 50k mark. He dominated Pikes against the best in the world, has won numerous big shorter events including national titles. He just need to stick to this type of stuff, keep his sponsorship's and possibly consider to even go back to Marathon stuff to get his speed back and drop another OTQ then go back to Mountain running. This 100 miler stuff being 50th place or DNF just isn't cool and only makes him look bad when he ISN'T bad, in fact he's great.
Sage I know you will end up reading this in the next few weeks..... We all enjoy your performances, but go back to marathon to 50k stuff and let's see them dominant wins, you're only trashing your body / legs and mind doing this stupid 100 stuff.
Old man Browning 20th; Sage still out there, not in top 50. #Itoleyaso

Sage through in 5th. Will he finally beat Jeff Browning, who is now probably in about 50th right now? #Ireallydoubtit

I totally agree with that.
Same is probably true for Walmsley.
I think Sage and Walmsley should do whatever floats their boats. If that means underperforming expectations at events out of their comfort zones, that makes them brave dudes in my book.
If they were both focused on running road marathons and both ran 2:10, so what, they're still finishing a mile behind the world's best. Do what you want, Sage. Live.

Sage, I get the criticism. His skillset is probably more similar to Max King. Walmsley has a chance against the Euro's here. These guys are much more seasoned than him and he put up a pretty damn good race here this weekend. He's still got time yet to learn and improve. Francois and Kilian were just better on this course on this weekend. Xavier was with those guys early but either recognized he wasn't really going to contend today or was under distress early that forced him back, he had a heckuva rally. Also like the way Tollefson ran. He's chipping away at it and has a pretty long view it seems like. Didn't lay back as much as he did last year but recognized it would have been suicide for him to go out with the top 4 early.
Not sure I agree. In the sub ultra major mountain races he would have to deal with guys who are much stronger in the mountains than him who also have quite a bit more speed. I saw he did a mountain 10k this year as well as mt. Washington again. Both times Joe Gray crushed him. Sage races marathon at mont blanc and again Kilian and King dominated him. The hundred is his best option as things can go wrong and speedy guys may blow up ahead of him. The shorter distances are too competitive for Sage to try and return back to IMO. He wants to make $$
I'm glad that Jim has come along. He makes these races more exciting and hopefully one day he'll pull it out, but still, 5th in this field is truly elite and I don't think anyone can argue that. God knows we've all probably messed up in races...

The issue is not that things can go wrong in long races. The issue is that Walmsley talked big but has never delivered beyond 50 miles.
At the end he is just a very good ultrarunner but not better than anybody else, which he claims he is. His whole BS talk of bringing speed into ultrarunning is a farce after his one hour and 10 minute defeat at the UMBT today.
