1. The russians want chaos in the big rich western democracies. they want democracy to be badly run and embarassing. SO they can go to the russian people and say 'hey - is that what you really want? I didnt' think so...let's just have Putin be king - that's better for us.'
2. russia wants NATO weakened. THey know nationalists like trump will not care about treaties.
3. russia thinks HRC would be more likely to stand up to russia around the world.

As Trump's children have been cited saying, Trump owes Russia money, and Putin can use that against him.
Why did Trump campaign on withdrawing from NATO and lobby the Republican Party to change its stance on Russia? These are things that Putin would love. The strong western alliance against him has imposed sanctions that have contracted his economy something like 30%. Putin supports far right isolationists in all countries because western alliances weaken his relative power.

Trump is a very strange, stupid and pathetic man. People are giving him too much credit, even for an elected President. His thing for Eastern European women has come to all of this; just bizarre. Firing Comey is both predictably stupid, but not the crisis all the bedwetters that earn a living -- just talking -- would have us believe.
I don't think Trump actually worries much about impeachment but I think his mostly incompetent staff does. Comey is a smart guy, he will be fine, FBI is probably better off re-assuming a lower profile, if they can.
The take away for me is that Trump is a bigger coward than I thought possible, his list of "Things Tough Guys Do" that he made in 4th grade needs a re-write.
