Hall will be missed on the racing scene for many reasons, he was exciting to watch, a nice person, very likable, and he was respected and feared by the east africans. The only other american runner that has gained that respect is Evan Jager
I saw the finish of the Oly Trials in Houston. Meb 1st, hauling a**, waving the flag and generally being awesome. Hall 2nd, uninspiring and sourfaced.
In an interview, a happy and engaging Meb talked about how thrilled he was to get the win and rep his country. Hall said something like "Meb took off and I just didn't feel like going with him". I was half expecting a 'whatever'.
In hindsight that sounds like Low T got him even then. But either way, fairly/unfairly, that's my Ryan Hall.
Very unfortunate to hear about his health problems. Best of luck to you Mr. Hall. You were an inspiration for me for years, and your 2:04 was one of the races that I'll always remember. Good luck in your future endeavors.

The low T is probably from years of PED abuse. That may be permanent now. There's certainly a mental health issue with all the god crap. I feel sorry for him. This reminds me of that North Carolina State girl who jumped off the bridge. She got all that god crap in her head too. So some counseling, some testosterone and maybe he will be back.

Quite right. It would be like a 29:12 guy thinking he could run 2:08.
I am sad because Ryan's career is why I started running serious.
But I laugh because this reinforces those funny news articles about how running a lot is bad for your health.

Well, it makes sense that he retires, there were no signs that he could really come back... Sad, anyway.
If you check by the 2008 tables, his 2:06:17 is the best American running performance ever (only Khannouchi obviously faster), taking into consideration all distances from 800m to the marathon!
His best race in terms of place being the 2009 Boston marathon with the third place - a top three finish is not going to be happen often for Americans in any long distance race, let alone a WMM race.
