during tryouts for our girls college (d3) team they have to do a mile. Most of the guards were under 6 minutes and these aren't runners playing basketball. I assume that an NBA player ( guard) can run under 5 minutes. I would like to see just how fast though. I think we have to resist the temptation to put our limitations on other people.

The Egyptians didn't invent them either. Track and Field events, wrestling, etc go back into the mists of pre-history as military training which was expected of all the males within a city-state. To get inside the enemy's fortications, jumping and pole vaulting. To kill the enemy from a nice safe distance, throw something sharp or heavy at them; discus, javelin, shotput. To maintain military communications and scout your enemy's position, long distance running. To kill an opponent who is bigger and stronger than you at close range, take his legs out from under him and strangle him from behind, wrestling. Recreational sports like baseball, basketball, tennis, and American football are all children's games with little real military or survival application. However, modern corporations saw they were more interesting from a spectator's standpoint, and spent millions over many decades to convince the populations of soft industrial nations that these were in fact adult sports, in fact THE "real sports," THE "real athletes." When we run out of fossil fuels, Track and Field will be back in a big way, short of the Second Coming of Christ.

I thought the olympics started when cavemen had to kill dinosaurs.

Well an interview with his high school track coach would certainly shed a lot of light on this discussion. Where exactly was that interview?

My hero.
Holy cow, this board has a better geek turn-out than the Quiz Bowl one. I haven't seen this much grasping for relevence and useless anecdotes since my high school's career prepatory class.

Last year at 20 lbs. over my racing weight I was still able to manage a 4:30 mile. Personally I don't doubt that Hamilton could run a 4:30. He runs 3-4 miles per day on top of all of running he does in practices and games.
after reading through these posts i have come to these conclusions.
1. hamilton could run a 4:30 mile and more than likely is not the only one in the nba who could do so.
2. the people who don't think he can run that fast mainly think he can't because they are too insecure to admit a basketball player could run faster than them (ooooh, what a horrendous thought!)
3. the people that think hamilton can run that fast base their belief on common sense. if tubby highschoolers can run a 4:30 mile (all be it, these highschoolers must be very talented and could run much faster if they worked) then a basketball player who runs 3 miles per day, along with basketball practices, which are arguably harder than any distance workout (and don't give me this pro athletes don't work hard bullshit... they got to the pros for a reason) can probably pull it off as well... especially with the body type of someone like hamilton and considering he's known for taking excellent care of his body (never even tried alcohol before i believe) and is generally thought of as the most well conditioned player in the nba, which is no small feat considering the talent in that league.
Ian Thorpe ran a 4'08 mile in trainers before the sydney olympics...
FUCKING AROUND!!!
Joe Montana ran a 4'51 mile
AS AN 8TH GRADER!
o yea...Kobe Bryant does specific middle distance training on the track during the off season...something like 8x400 sub 60 with 3 minutes rest...
and im sure everyone has heard of jerry rice's sick 5k PR of 14'40...
not to put it past anyone, but athletes in major sports such MLB,NBA,NHL, and 1/3rd of MLB could probably run some damn fast times.
im sure hes tried alcohol. I mean the dudes a brotha, he need to be drankin his crystalle while he pimpin the hoes.
Don't forget the NASCAR crackers, too!

so many people who posted here think that running a 4:30 mile is "not that hard" for HS runners. Those people are stupid and they do not know what they are talking about. Unless you're somewhat talented, it takes lots of tough training to run that time. Go on the PSAL website and check how many kids can actually run 4:30 mile.
You guys who think he can run a 4:30 mile are pretty clueless about track and track training. I wonder about some of you running addicts who actually don't understand the sport. A 4:30 mile is not doable for most individuals without specific middle distance track training. He probably can keep a 4:30 mile pace for half of it and then will fall apart.
Jerry Rice ran a road 5k (Bay Area Race for Asthma) in 1989, and clocked a very respectable 15:09.
I was the race director, so this is a fact.
However, Rice did a great deal of training (hills, in particular).
Cheers,
