The pace was almost what was asked for by agents, coaches, etc at pre race meeting, in fact 1:01:40 was requested.
At post race interview Kimetto didn't say much except he believed he could go a lot faster, no doubt told by his agent to say that, so more big dollars ahead. Good luck to him.

Here Here~! She's tough. Her 2:21 matches her 30:22 10K (IMHO). I did not go to the grade comparison sites. I didn't expect an AR from her. At least she did not really blow up. All the runner's last 5K was slower--must be the course--- without checking.
I think this will end up being her lifetime PR. Great run.

She said she was going for the AR and was going to let the chips fall where they may and that is exactly what she did.
Give her credit for a 4 minute "recognized" PR. Marathon wise, she is now in a different altitude versus her 2:25.

agreed, given that most marathon WR's have been run on slight negative splits
In 2014, no US citizen ran a half marathon as fast as Kimetto's second half split of 61:12.
In fact only Meb(61:23) ran faster than Kimetto's avg pace of 61:29.

True- Winning a marathon major should mean WAY more to elite runners than losing races so you can try doing a paced time trial and run an obscure national record.

This is true. You should have seen how excited folks were to see Meb at Peachtree. They have no clue that his marathon is 5 mins slower than the fastest in the world. they know he won Boston.
The few hobby joggers who follow Berlin are posting "yea, Top 3 for USA!" they have no clue at the time. She ran a huge PR at Boston and came in 7th. Now give, she may just not be fast enough to win a major marathon, though her debut she got on the podium.... she seems happier running fast and blowing up... but its sad b/c she talks the talk and then doesn't get the time.
I can see her thinking "well, if I can't win, let me be best in the USA, but 2 mins short there hurts.... she clearly hasn't figured out the last 10k of the marathon.... she cratered in Boston, she bonked hard the last 5k here... I just have to question her coach..... go out at a pace that you think is reasonable, and pick it up if you feel good.... sounds more logical than go out faster than your fitness warrants and then crash hard.
She went out 2-3 mins faster than she should have for the 2:22 target goal in boston... and that didn't work. Today, she went out for the pace she wanted, and it didn't work... at some point... what is Coach seeing that makes her think this pace is possible. I'm all for running it if you thnk you have it.... but "hoping it's a good day" is not a great strategy.

Thanks for the advice, Pootcat Whisperfart! Next time, I think if I go out in a conservative 1:11:00 I can negative split for a 2:21:30-45. Then, you can tell me how I'm a wuss and could have gone for the record if I wasn't so afraid of blowing up.
Not sure my prior post stated me as, FTC (instead of ttc). Auto-correct, I guess. It's getting to the point where these guys will tempo 2:09 pretty soon.

w0rd. A modest amount of criticism is fair game but some posters giving Flanagan too much flack. She had male pacers! In a situation like that, to run steady and fast is the best strategy. Now, it would be a different scenario is she were going out too fast by herself and not adequate considering her direct competition.
