i'd love to see mo or galen (or ryan hall who i believe is in PC) try to run hard up grandeur peak in SLC while they're in town training. 3200 vert in 2.2 miles. best time is right around 40. i'd be impressed if they could go under 45.
Nate, is that really all the FKT is? I just finally got up the west trail up mountain tonight for the first time, as I always have just run it from within the canyon. I ran it in the dark, brought my dog, made a couple wrong turns, and kept it REALLY casual so as to not get sore before Speedgoat on Saturday; it took me 51:22. I suspect i could run around 44-45 right now if I did it full out, and I'm a) in pretty bad shape right now, and b) a pretty weak climber. I think if someone really fast got out there, it could be done in sub-35 pretty easily. I think there is a special type of ability required to go hard on uphills many miles into a race and I certainly don't have that ability, but for shorter distances (marathon and under), I'm not convinced that it takes a lot more than general running fitness and strength to run well, even on pretty steep courses. In my experience, all of the vertical gain in the world didn't make me a great trail runner, but one decent marathon training cycle and only 2 trail runs within 6 months got me into good enough shape to be even with the former Speedgoat CR holder at mile 20 of BOSHO trail marathon before putting something like 10 minutes on him over the last 6 net downhill miles. With that in mind, I don't think that Mo or Galen really lack anything required to run fast up Grandeur and I'm sure they could absolutely crush me on it. At the end of the day, I'm a pretty mediocre runner and I certainly have no special trail abilities.
