I finally got around to watching the video. I was expecting some fairly egregious contact. But seriously? That was what she got DQd for? The contract was barely noticeable and made absolutely no difference in the outcome of the race. That's just a huge dickhead move by Salazar. F*cking over the clear winner of the race and keeping her from being on the world championship team.

1st and foremost the actions / indecisions by USATF are unfortunate at best - they appear little more than puppets for Nike. As to the actual incident I would blame that more on the slow pace then dirty racing. Grunewald couldn't wait to unleash her kick. I agree, especially given her kick, she should have given herself more space when passing both runners but I didn't see anything that should have warrented a DQ, which he officials confirmed not once but twice.

Clearly Grunewald was boxed in the last two laps. She tried to pass on the inside and that path rightly got closed out. In a frantic move she cut across wide to pass running right through Jordan's back kick. Jordan almost fell.
Fact Grunewald had bad position.
Fact Grunewald clearly was the strongest finisher.
As a certified USATF official, I NEVER saw any of the umpires raise a yellow flag indicating a foul or anything other than incidental contact. See 127-5 below. This DOQ is TOTAL bull$hit! Appalling.

outside the lane or where the baton was passed.
6. In walking events, the assigned Umpires shall perform their duties as in any other event,

That was pretty weak. Hasey has got to be embarrassed about the whole thing. And she probably feels even worse because if she speaks up she will be shit on by her coach and her sponsor.
This DQ is pretty shocking. Anyone who watches the video, and sees anything beyond a clipped heel and incidental contact, is either biased, insane, or inexperienced. I can't remember seeing such a soft DQ based on contact in a distance race. Considering the majority (if not all) of Salazar's athletes have international racing experience at this point, it's surprising to see him freak out over contact that would barely be noticed at a European indoor meet. He's not doing his athletes any favors. Hasay would be better off knowing that her race doesn't need to unfold perfectly in order for her to run well.
The bigger issue, obviously, is Salazar's (and by extension Nike's) apparent ability to override both a rejected protest and appeal. It's inappropriate and disturbing. A larger investigation is probably wishful thinking, since presumably it would be up to USATF to initiate that investigation.
Hopefully Brooks still honors whatever bonus(es) exist in Grunewald's contract for winning a U.S. title and making the World Indoor team.
I'm not privvy to the rules or the rulings but those photos sure do show a foul caused by the athlete in yellow.

Why does one athlete get into so many jostling, bumping, elbowing? Maybe it is her style. If so she needs to tweak it. She comes off as overly aggressive and out of control and unsportsmanlike. She would have one last night without running into two of her fellow racers. It's a shame she brings such controversy upon herself.
I have watched the women's 3000m video 5 times and even if this thread reach a thousand post, it want change the fact that Gabe clearly committed a violation. Her coach did what a coach is supposed to do and that's file a protest and USATF did what it is suppose to do and rule that Gabe committed a violation. No matter what your personal thoughts are about USATF, Nike, NOP, AlSal or Hasay, 'the rules are the rules' and our personal thoughts don't trump the rules.
As former, athlete, coach and now a fan, I have been impacted by the rules and I don't always like how the rules are applied especially when they negatively impact me or an athlete I am a fan of, but 'the rules are the rules'. To people speaking out in support of Gabe, I concur with your personal feelings, especially in light of the fact that Gabe appeared to be the best athlete in that race. However, if Russian athlete does to an American athlete we would all be in favor of DQing that Russian athlete. There were numerous post in favor of DQing the Russian athlete who had contact with Ajee Wilson during the WC women's 800m final...think about it. I say to WEJO, Lauren Fleshman and Shalane Flanagan, search your career as far back as high school and you will see at least one case how the rules have helped you.

The DQ itself is pretty laughable, but reasonable people can debate that.
The part that NO reasonable person will defend is a coach bullying an out-of-process flip-flop of a decision made and upheld THREE TIMES through the appropriate processes.
That's why Alberto's chickens are coming home to roost. Pushed his luck a bit to far. A lot like his buddy Lance.
