I agree with your post. I was watching Cops one time and a police officer sicked his German Shepard on a dude and the guy kicked that dog so hard that the dog yelped and went down. The police officers had quickly rush in to save the dogs life.

That obviously talks more about it fighting a wolverine, but the part about genital mutilation and its track record versus lions makes me think it could cause fatal blood loss in a man before he could figure out how to kill it. The HB's thick skin might not save it from being crushed, though, if the man figured out the best way to use his weight to his advantage.

I've broken up a fight between pit-bulls before but never thought about what I would have done if mine had turned on me.
He always seemed pretty sheepish when I shouted "bad boy, put it down" and very cheerful when I squeaked "who wants a cookie?".

After watching those videos there is no way a honey badger or wolverine could win in a death match vs a man.
- They're pure defensive animals praised for their resilience only. It may take an hour to kill them but that's OK, because they have zero offense. Just slow & extremely hard creatures to kill.
- Mouth is way too small to cause any real damage unless they somehow find a way to climb up to your esophagus & are able to latch on.
- The honey badger is completely towered over in those videos. What are they going to do to a human? Gnaw away at your ankles to your death?
Viruses and bacteria are not animals! One is in kingdom bacteria and the other isn't even considered alive...

Everyone seems to be skipping over the fact that in a straight up fight between an animal with sharp teeth and claws, no matter how small, the animal has a much higher damage per hit ratio. Your main weapon would be your blunt fists, whereas the animal has a very good chance of drawing blood with every attack. To land a hard hitting blow, you would need to get a good position to get your weight behind the kick/punch, whereas the animal can do damage with a less than perfect set up.
Take the German Shepard example - thing runs at you fast, probably jumps for the face. It's going to be on you quick, you've minimal chance of landing a good hit in time. Most likely thing is you are knocked down, or falling back at best. At that short range, with both of you tangled up, the dog can probably continue to make effective attacks, with a chance to draw blood on each one around the face and throat. You on the other hand would struggle to apply enough force to something so near to you that your blows would do almost nothing.
After 60 seconds of this, I think you'd be wounded badly, loosing blood rapidly, and physically very tired.

We have teeth too. In a fight to the death you use whatever is available. We also have claws that will come in handy with eye gouging. Shepard's are good at taking down people that are fleeing or are scared. In a fight to the death I would be the predator and stomp the shit out of that thing.
I have a pure bred pit bull (70 pounds) and I have no doubt he would not stand a chance against me in a fight. The odds are in an athletic mans favor against any dog.
I think the smallest animal that would consistently beat a man in a fight would be a mountain lion. Of course without the benefit of a surprise of attack I think even a mountain lion would have a hard time killing an athletic man.
Wolverines and honey badgers are slow and clumsy. No match for us.

Most animals aren't great fighters in the way we think about it. They do a lot of blustering and fighting is usually defensive or in rare cases to eat you. Quite often they will give up once they determine they might not win or determine you are no longer a threat. Obviously if they are hungry and want to eat you, that could pose a real problem but even then it not about defeating you, it's to get a meal. Luckily for us, we are generally not seen as a food source, because animals are usually far more aware of our presence than we are of theirs and there would be more animal attacks. To the point, most of the small animals people mentioned would have trouble dealing with our weight and long appendages. Although, I guess almost any animal that gets the jump on you and severs a vein will defeat you.
My vote is from the humble Chimp because they know who to grab and deal effectively with our appendages. I once watched a 100 pound chimp flip a 200 pound tractor tire like it was car tire. Btw, it is grossly unfair to take away what makes a man a man. The man should be able to at least have a knife, unless you are going to tell the animal he can't bring his teeth and claws to the fight.
On February 16, 2009, Travis [a chimp] attacked Sandra Herold's friend Charla Nash, age 55, inflicting devastating injuries to her face and limbs. Travis had left the house with Herold's car keys, and Nash came to help get the animal back in the house; upon seeing Nash, Travis immediately attacked her.
Travis was familiar with Nash, who had also worked at the Herolds' towing company, although Nash had a different hair style at the time of the attack.
The chimp had been taking medication for Lyme disease.
Herold, then 70 years old, attempted to stop Travis by hitting him with a shovel and stabbing him with a butcher knife. "For me to do something like that – put a knife in him – was like putting one in myself," Herold later said. The chimp turned around, she said, as if to say, "'Mom, what did you do?'"
The animal was angered more. Herold then called 9-1-1 and pleaded for help. Travis' screams can be heard in the background of the tape as Sandra pleads for police, who initially believed the call to be a hoax, until she started screaming, "He's eating her!"
Emergency medical services waited for police before approaching the house. Travis walked up to the police car when it arrived and tried to open a locked passenger door, instead smashing a side-view mirror. Then he went calmly around to the driver's-side door and opened it, at which point Officer Frank Chiafari shot him several times. Travis retreated to the house, where he was found dead next to his cage.
Injuries to Nash were described as "horrendous" by the emergency crew. Within the following 72 hours, she underwent more than seven hours of surgery on her face and hands by four teams of surgeons. The hospital provided counseling to its staff members who initially treated her because of the extraordinary nature of Nash's injuries. Paramedics noted she lost her hands, nose, eyes, lips, mid-face bone structure, and received significant brain tissue injuries.
Doctors successfully reattached her jaw, but announced on April 7, 2009 that Nash would be blind for life. Her injuries made her a possible candidate for an experimental face transplant surgery.
After initial treatment at Stamford Hospital, Nash was transferred to the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Her family started a trust fund to raise money to pay her "unfathomable" medical bills and support her daughter.Nash revealed her damaged face in public for the first time on The Oprah Winfrey Show on November 11, 2009. She was not in physical pain from the attack, and family members said she hoped to leave the Cleveland Clinic soon. Pictures have surfaced on the Internet displaying Nash's face before and after the attack.
In June 2011 Nash underwent transplant surgery performed by a team led by MUDr. Bohdan Pomahač at the Harvard teaching affiliate, Brigham and Women's Hospital, receiving a donated face and hands. The hands transplant was successful, but because Nash developed pneumonia shortly thereafter, doctors were forced to remove her newly transplanted hands due to the infection and resulting poor circulation.
In accordance with standard procedure, Travis's head was taken to the state laboratory for a rabies test and the body was taken to the University of Connecticut for a necropsy.
The head tested negative for rabies, but there was Xanax remaining in his system. Necropsy results in May 2009 confirmed the chimp was overweight and had been stabbed. The remains were cremated at All Pets Crematory in Stamford on February 25, 2009.
Toxicology reports confirmed Sandra's statement that she had given Travis Xanax-laced tea the day of the attack which could have exacerbated his aggression. Xanax (Alprazolam) is a short acting potent anti-anxiety drug that can cause disinhibition and disorientation and occasionally paradoxical reactions of hallucination, aggression, rage and mania.
