Roupen Bastajian, a 35-year-old state trooper from Smithfield, R.I., had just finished the race when they put the heat blanket wrap on him and he heard the blasts.
"I started running toward the blast. And there were people all over the floor," he said. "We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. A lot of people amputated. ... At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing."

The guy in Orange is Bill Iffrig, a runner for Club Northwest. Many recognized the singlet from the photo and we are all relieved that he is okay. He IS a tough guy - still running cross country nationals and this was his 3rd Boston, I think.

I think that this would be much more helpful and supportive than posting a picture of a ribbon on Facebook or wearing a race shirt tomorrow.

At this moment in history, there is only one religion that systematically terrorizes "nonbelievers/infidels" through extreme violence or with credible threats of violence. What's worse, many practitioners of this particular faith are not afraid to die carrying out acts of terrorism against infidels. They believe they will be rewarded in "paradise" for their martyrdom. Dying is actually encouraged, and they are not afraid. That's the scary and dangerous reality of Islam. It's a problem, and I'm not sure what the solution is.

If its 25-30 then approximately 20% of all the injured people lost limbs at the scene, which seems really high.
I don't think anyone is lying, but its normal for people to exaggerate in a situation like this.
Reading absolutely everything that every possible news outlet has had to say about the bombing so far has exhausted me but still feel the need to vent. My apologies but I still can't comprehend this.
After reading about these bombings at the marathon today in the spectator area, I keep thinking about how these people were there just to watch their friend, significant other, or running idol do what they set out to do. The 26.2 miles we run isn't a symbol of any contemporary political ideology or any divisive meaning. This event is meant purely to showcase the resiliency of the human spirit. Many of us understand that the love of running comes from removing yourself from the pressures of the world, with the only variable in front of you being how hard do you want to push yourself. Us fans and runners know this, and that's why I feel the running community has the most pure fans in sport. We don't hold particularly hold strong allegiances based upon the country or team your jersey represents. I'd like to believe that at its essence, we all understand running is indeed about the human spirit. How far one solitary activity can seemingly carry a whole population through life. While I cannot comprehend what those affected are going through, I do want them to know that you have the entire running community behind you doing everything we can to help keep your faith in the human spirit.

Have you ever helped with the end of a large marathon event? Do you know what it's like? I have. I volunteer to give something back to runners.
The end of a large marathon is extremely crowded. You would have to push and shove to get though the crowd. Side-by-side people.
The bombs contained shrapnel; bbs pellets plus similar, according to reports. Do some research on shrapnel bombs, and then think about hundreds of people standing very close to one. Then multiply by two, for two bombs that went off.

I know it is easy to be overwhelmed and sickened in light of a tragedy like this, but if we can glean one positive from this it's the tremendous efforts by the first responders on the scene after the blast. Hearing the accounts of how paramedics, race officials, police officers and numerous civilians quickly organized amid the chaos to treat the wounded and secure the bystanders is inspiring. One news article mentioned a state trooper who, wrapped in a heat blanket having just finished the marathon, heard the blast and immediately rushed back to the scene and helped apply tourniquets to the wounded with what material they could find.

Like everyone else here I watched several versions of the video. This may have been covered earlier in the thread--but was that Dick Hoyt on the course (pushing his son)? I remember running by and seeing him back in the 90s when I ran Boston. It would make sense that he would be around 4 hours nowadays given the fact he was smokin' along at 3 hour pace (again---pushing his grown son) in those days.
Seemed like he was on the other side of the road when the blast went off.
Whoever was looking for the identity of the man in the wheelchair missing his legs, someone halfway down on this thread claims to know him and provided photographic proof.
