To the person that said they were cocky for trying to run 5 people...they struggled with injuries and one of their top 7, was out injured. Their 7/8 runner didn't run in this meet for whatever reason but the fact that they essentially ran their 2,3,4,5, &7/8 runner just lends credence to their strength as a team

Is this a joke? I'm sure my comments earlier would have been perceived to be "negative" yet I have not been contacted nor received a single dollar from Nike. However, if Nike is paying people for "negative" comments then please remind them to send me a paycheck.

part of strength as a team is kids caring enough about the team to show up for the meet, imo
There's no way we can be sure their 7th runner wasn't injured. It's not like we get press releases on this stuff. However, most people seem to believe that their team is cocky or the kid lacks commitment. I'm not quite sure how people can make this assumption when they essentially know nothing about these kids other than what they've read on this thread.

I should clarify: I meant that McGorty didn't care enough about the team to show up. Not that the runners further back didn't.
Sean wears nike mid calves and nike spikes for every race. he committed to stanford which is sponsored by nike. yet, he goes to FL and not NXN. THE NERVE.

I think the only thing we can take from this is that the team goals came second to individual goals this postseason for Chantilly, but that they nearly achieved both behind a remarkable effort from Parshall and the rest of the group at NXN-SE.
I think we can also take away from this that there are few teams that can make it to NXN without one or more of their potential scorers...
Why doesn't Nike just buy the rights to the meet from Footlocker??? This issue seems like it could be easily resolved! It used to be Kinney back in the day then it changed to FL and now we also have a second national championship...NXN. Dear Nike: If you're going to hold a National meet at least make sure it's the only one!! The size of Nike and it's financial muscle makes Footlocker look like a small shop in town. What are they thinking over there?? Same thing with indoor and outdoor track. If this company really wants to put its stamp on the holding the national meets it needs to resolve this solution I'm sure it's not that difficult. Come on Phil Knight, I'm sure you can take a break from worrying about the shareholders for an hour or two.
I happen to be in the camp that disagrees with your decision. Whatever, that's over now. If you want to be one of the best runners you need one of two skills:
1) The ability to read the ramblings of these retarded short bus riders and ignore their opinion (seeing as how none of them have ever run at your level, I wouldn't pay much attention)
2) The ability to NEVER READ LRC MESSAGE BOARDS. Nothing good comes from them.

IF you go back in time to 2004 Nike sponsored both Foot Locker and obviously NXN. They convinced FL to increase the number of qualifiers from 32 at FLN to 40. There were 8 qualifiers from the region and 2 qualifiers from NXN Regions. Nike knew back then that they couldn't compete with the allure of Foot Locker, so they cam up with a solution. It seemed to work until they stopped sponsoring the race.

Wow a tough one. Good topic as these 2 meets conflict in a lot of ways and create these tough decisions. Being an asst. XC HS coach myself, as someone already said it depends on how the team and coach feel about it. If he got the team's blessing then he should go with his needs. That's awesome his team nearly rose to the occasion and won without him.
Anyway glad FL is getting some cred and hey, I think they throw a pretty good party too.
mcgorty is obviously not the devil/trying to be selfish and rid his team of an experience, and many of us probably don't even know the circumstances present in him making his decision.. Along with this, did McGorty even run with his team at Nike, isn't is quite ridiculous to blame him for them not making it when he wasn't even in the race to begin with? If they were really trying to take a team to Portland they would have put McGorty in the Nike race instead of breaking him away from his team to try to qualify for an entire different race. The kid isn't superman. He can't please everyone.

Exactly. He ran an AMAZING race at foot locker south, thus qualifying for THAT RACE. It's unfortunate that his team didn't qualify, but Sean didn't run there and shouldn't be held responsible for what they essentially lost themselves.
In hindsight, McGorty made the right decision. None of the NXN Big 4 (Montoya, Leingang, Ryan, Burcham) finished in the top 3 today. It's a shame to say that Footlocker will produce the true individual champion. Top tier individuals are more likely going to go to San Diego in future years now because of the catastrophe that was today.

Never forget: 17:08 and 19:17. Sam Whorton and Sara Baxter officially forever(probably) the slowest 'National' champion running slower than the average 4th-5th guy on a pretty good HS team does on a real XC course(not a tough mudder)
