Symmonds previous best was 1:43.76, today he ran 1:42.95, so .8 of a seconds better. He ran a fantastic race as did everyone in the race. I was clapping in front of my computer.
Just think, if he ran a world record caliber front-run 1:41.8 he would have lost! GOATGOATGOAT
NB: only the third man to hold the 800m WR since 1979.
What an amazing 800m race. It was crazy just watching it on my computer screen. That was one of the all time greatest track performances in history. Wire to wire, olympic final, winning in world record time. Amazing!!
And the Americans, my god, great showing from them too. Johnny Gray was right about Duane Solomon being in great shape. He passed maybe 2-3 guys in the home straight was gaining on the Kenyan. Symmonds though, came storming down the stretch as he layed off the pace. I don't think those guys can feel bad at all, everybody in that final ran amazing.

Really does. People may rag on symmonds for sitting back, but I think he played it right. Considering the field went out on WR pace, any other race everyone would have come back to him. Can't blame him for being abit cinservative with that pace. Great race for the Americans. btw, calling BS amos being 18. 1:41 as an 18 year old? no way.
Agree with the Symmonds part, but disagree with the Amos part. What kind of evidence do you have to support that accusation?
That has to be the best ever time for place for every single place.
Last place - 1:43.77
Exactly. He was in position to pick up the pieces left by Rudisha shattering the field. Except Amos and Kitum (18 & 17 years old) did not shatter.
Before the race if you said Rudisha opened in 49 low and broke the world record and Symmonds closed to finish in 1:42.95, we'd all think MEDAL!! It was just an epic race.
Great performance by Solomon and Symmonds, there was just a greater performance from Rudisha, Amos, and Kitum.
Amos is the 3rd fastest of all time. WHAT.THE.HELL
craaaazy race.
I'd love to see his training records leading up to this race.
How would you like to be Nijel Amos? You run one of the fastest times in history (equal to Lord Coe himself) and you would be Olympic champ at 18 IF you didn't have the greatest ever setting a world record right in front of you.
In the entire field only Kaki didn't set a personal best.
Two sub 1:43s didn't medal. Nothing to be ashamed of for the Americans.
WOW, what a race.
So that with no pacers.
I'm starting to maybe believe Rudisha when he says he can run 48.5/50.5

you are willing to accept a 19yo running 1:40 but not an 18 yo running 1:41?
rudisha is 23???? what are you talking about?
Will NBC even show it tonight?
Amazing run by Rudisha so pleased for him.
Has there ever been a faster race than this?:
Rudisha - World record, fastest time ever
Amos - 8th fastest time ever (tied with Coe and Kipketer)
Kitum - 29th fastest time ever
Solomon - 58th fastest time ever
Symmonds - 71st fastest time ever (tie)
Aman - 120th fastest time ever (tie)
Kaki - 151st fastest time ever (tie)
Osagie - 329th fastest time ever (tie)
Well done, Rudisha, and congratulations.
Sincerely,
Wino Hobo

Wow! I was off on that one.
I must have been thinking about Kirani James.
Great interview by Rudisha on BBC. So good, they showed it twice! Also caught a glimpse of the NBC interview as well so it looks like they will show it at least.
So happy for David, what a great champion.
How many of you went OH SH!T when you saw Rudisha start hammering it at 300m to go and then saw that 1:14 split. WOW
Just think...before today. The U.S. only had ONE runner go sub 1:43, ever.
Symmonds had a shot to medal thought.
Rudisha is simply amazing. But he won't be a household name as some seem to think.
