For starters, everyone talking about HJ vs. vertical jumping ability, wtf? You get to run when you dunk, so she gets a running start. The guy I have seen jump highest in person and I have seen pro basketball players and the highest level college volleyball players in person is a freshman on the UCLA volleyball team daenan gyimah.

The guy is 6'8" and has at least a 40 inch vertical. If he ever trained in high jumping growing up he probably would have been world class.

The guy gets some serious height and air time.

Unfortunately, two-foot vertical jumping doesn't always translate to one-foot high jumping and bending your body over the bar. Knew a high school kid who could hit his head on the rim and high-jumped 6'7" with almost no practice, but never got better. He did fill out and ended up being an All American in the decathlon, but never got the knack of high jumping.

Three things:

1. Vlasic can surely dunk. I am 6-6 with a high jump PR of 6-5. I could dunk easily with two hands jumping off one or both feet. If Vlasic is 6-4 and could high jump 6-10 there is no doubt in my mind that she could dunk.

2. The NBA argument is dumb. Dunking in a game is much harder than dunking in practice. I could throw it down in practice but in my life have only dunked in a game twice. Both were on fast breaks where nobody was close to me. On one I was called for traveling. I rarely got fast break opportunities because I was usually playing in the paint scrapping for rebounds while the shorter guards who could not dunk got the fast breaks.

3. Vlasic is hot.

Not sure but not likely. Basketballs are hard to dunk if you can't palm the ball. Yes, it can be done easily so long as you can get your hand about 18" above he rim. Volleyballs are easier because you only need to get your hand above the rim.

My guess is that Vlasic is an amazing athlete and can get her hand above a 10' rim.

But, high jumping and leaping high are two very different things. World class high jumpers know how to get their body to follow a momentum path determined by speed and stopping the speed. Leapers mostly get where they want with brute force and muscle explosion.

Think of it this way, a leapers momentum path is the vertical jump distance between the bottom of the foot and the ground. That's it, hard to do but the body is not horizontal. High jumpers know how to use the same momentum path and get their whole body to follow it. It doesn't necessarily mean they can get their hands higher on a backboard.

I jumped on a University team and one teammate could barely get his hand above a basketball rim, another teammate could put his shoulder above a basketball rim. They both had the same PR of 7'. One lept and the other high jumped.
