Pat Porter was born in Wadena and his family moved to Evergreen, Colorado, when he was seven.
Daws was on the 1968 Olympic marathon team.
Nenow tops the list at track 10k with AR 27:20, with Porter and Bjorklund at 27:45 and 27:46 or thereabouts.
Kempainen best at the marathon with 2:08:47, followed by Beardsley 2:08:52 (both at downhill Boston), and Bjorklund at 2:10:20 (Grandma's).
But who has done better after high school? Koborsi was one of the fastest, if not the fastest Texan high school runner. He almost beat Webb in the 5K last spring. I think we have yet to see his best. I hate to say it, but Texans seem to peak in high school, and those who improve in college do not have outstanding careers. Can you really name anyone better? If so, how many? I have racked my brains trying to figure this one out.
Are we talking about Texas runners or Kansas?
Some pretty good Texans include 5k Olympian and U.S. Cross champ Ruben Reina. Also his brother Randy ran around 28:30 for 10k.
One of the fastest U.S. milers ever was Todd Harbour who ran 3:50 back in 81 or 82.
Then for the marathon I think Marty Froelick was from Texas. I'm pretty sure he ran 2:10.
But the best ever would be Francie Larriue. I know she's lived in Texas but I'm not sure if she is a native.

Fred Torneden from Kansas, extremely underated with a 2:11:35 win at the 1984 Twin Cities (same exact time as Dan Browne's 2002 winning time there). Fred was from Eskridge, KS 1975, Butler County Junior College, El Dorado, KS 1977 and Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS 1979. I seriously doubt anyone has run 2:11:35 from the United States that came from the same kind of background as Fred. He was a solid runner in college, trained hard, but his PR's over 5k and 10k didn't stand out like a guy who ran 2:11. Coaching-wise he got a Masters at Texas 88-90, then was head coach at Coffeyville Junior College, KS 90-92, and at Butler County Junior College, KS 92-99. His wife Deb is also the best long-distance runner/road racer woman ever from Kansas and in her younger years was Big 8 athlete of the year (from K-state) while also running the 1500m/3000m at the Oly Trials (went on to run the marathon trials all the way through 2000).
