Optically, it looks off too. Kipyegon, Hull and Welteji all very graceful strides. Bell leaning backwards, doesn’t look particularly fast or smooth yet overhauling the latter two.
Serious question — is that not allowed at the highest level? I have seen some damn ugly strides run down gazelles in races. Thanks.
Well, on the one hand, everyone has gotten a lot better recently between the shoes, the somewhat suspect bicarb/supplementation stuff everyone is doing, training advances, etc.
But on the other hand, call a spade a spade (for her and Jess Hull). It would never surprise me if anyone was doping, but those two are particularly notable for just silly improvements. If they were north Africans we wouldn't even be having this discussion, it would just be assumed.

THOUGHTSLEADER doesn't answer awkward questions. If he could he would and then he would be a real THOUGHTSLEADER, a true LEADER if THOUGHTS. But since he isn't, then he won't, because he can't.
But that's just my opinion. And opinions are like arseholes, everyone's got one. He's welcome to prove me wrong. But I would wager a tidy sum that I'm right.
She's a prominent heelstriker (the only heelstriker to medal in a track event at the olympics) and the new shoes help heelstrikers more than normal good forefoot runners
From collegiate also-ran (4:12) to Olympic bronze medalist (3:52) in 1 year, finishing just behind sus Jess Hull who did NOT take a 5-year break from running, it clearly must be one or the other.
Discus
There were suspicions about Katir - ultimately justified - who improved 8 secs in a year, from 3:36 to 3:28. Bell has more than doubled that improvement. That pretty much answers the question.
Hocker improved 10 secs in the build up to Tokyo and only got tested once there year.
Dodged testers again this year and improves by another 3 after zero improvement since 2021.

He ran a 3:50 mile in college and won the NCAA meet , stop it now

GB is a cheater
Yeah, very dumb comparisson to draw. A 20 year old college kid who hadn't run track races since the pandemic would be expected to make big breakthroughs and Hocker clearly was rising to a level he belonged at all year in 2021. If anything, you could make that argument for Bell and maybe have some legs to stand on, she's finally back to running full-time so she basically just improved every race. Again, it's still a little odd that she wasn't running anywhere near as fast until the Olympics and she wasn't winning races like Hocker (showing he had more in the tank) but if she was still working cyber security at the time MAYBE that could be explained. Still, she's a 30 year old woman who had a running background so I'm still so skeptical of this breakthrough season. Again, that's what was most suspicious about Katir. Not just that he dropped 8 seconds in the 1500 but that he had been an established runner at his level around 3:36 at best. He wasn't some teenage phenom or injury prone stud lying in wait, he just dropped the time out of nowhere. Now we know why.

I had a response but it never went through. I’m not saying every world-beater has a great stride, nor has to. It was just an observation on Bell. In the context of training half as much running mileage (or even less) than her competition with a quarter of their years of accumulated mileage/base it just is another thing. If you are making the case for her, surely you don’t think it’s all her engine from 30mpw and 100mpw biking? Or maybe coaches have got it all wrong and should be making biking a much bigger part of the regimen?

You can't estimate a runner's efficiency by looking at their stride.

Thanks. No, not making a case for her, was genuinely wondering. And I agree the other women mentioned have beautiful strides. 🐎

In the running for most ignorant post of the day.
It's the truth buddy. I don't know why people on Letsrun are so scared of this truth. Probably hard to handle because your idol Parker Valby also does this.
It's also why Bell's stride looks so bad, her hips are set in a weird position to make space for her heels to land on the track first.
You see women doing this more often than men. Probably because it's significantly slower. There's a reason the last good male heel striker was Morceli.
It works better with the new shoes because you give the carbon spring more to do.
The title says it all. Either the most talented runner of all time or to the gills. Which is it? The answer does not require an explanation as to why she sucked from ages 17 to 29.
You didn't in all seriousness throw in j hull's name?
I’m suspicious of her vast improvement but her stride is a powerful, efficient one. Not awkwardly leaning back and “deceptive” like Bell’s.
Track athletics is not an aesthetic sport. If it was, Kipyegon and Hill would be far more suspicious than Bell.
Kipyegon has short legs (although she has thankfully covered up her saggy stomach this year) and Hull has chunky legs. Bell on the other hands looks graceful as a gazelle and is naturally lean whilst retaining strength compared to the other two. Physically, she looks like a thoroughbred who will out perform the other two.
She only leans back a little when she is tiring in a finish and trying to use her sprint. She sprints by lengthening her stride and retaining her knee lift, rather than from sheer power like more muscular, chunky athletes. A bit like the way Michael Johnson sprinted over much shorter distances.
Top junior athlete who suffered stress fractures in the intense collegiate system who then allow d her body to recover and then moved to an endurance sport (duathlon). Georgia Bell absolutely obliterated the rest of the women while racing as an amateur in the world duathlon championships last year. It's like some kind of ideal formula for producing a top track athlete at age 30 without destroying them in their twenties. Faith Kipyegon on the other hand? Still improving despite years in the sport and major injuries a couple of months before championships?

Yes, you can. A better stride has better efficiency. That isn't to say there aren't other factors that apply, such as aerobic capacity.
