Thought he might win it with 50 to go but Aregawi came up to edge him for 2nd.
Ran a fantastic race tactically. Stayed in lane 1, stayed up front but not leading, moved when it counted and came off the final turn in a great spot with an open run to the finish. It’s a big deal getting a medal with this kind of comp. He deserves it fully.
Last time I was this pumped, I was in a hotel room in Kansas City watching Farah bring home gold, Rupp bring home silver, Jess Mills (British) bring home gold, and Rutherford (British) bring home gold in the span of 5 minutes. Unfortunately, now I know better about what was going on with Mills, Farah, and Rupps.
Tonight, I was intrigued at the gun. I was on the edge of my seat by 17 minutes. I was shouting at the TV telling Nico to hang on and Fisher to f-ing push at at 24 minutes. I was crying at 26:43 when Cheptegei won it, Aregawi outkicked Fisher, and Fisher got bronze.
Best Olympic distance race ever. THIS IS WHY WE LOVE THE SPORT!!!
I like Fisher and congrats to him. That was a great run - these were Africans he beat, people!
That said, I too find his racing style unentertaining, and while his tactics may work up to national level, I can with confidence predict he'll never win anything at global. He has no explosive kick, so there always be "Aregawi's" to dust him in the last 100.
Yeah, but a medal at the olympics is enough to call him an American legend. He won an NCAA title, two high school xc titles (while being a miler), and a couple american titles.
there'll always be someone better, no one's gonna win every time when they go out.
I'd trade an olympic bronze for an indoor or world gold anyways. He's certainly been capable of winning and now's not the time to rain on his parade
All the athletes are do much faster now and it crowds the finish. It's time to stop hugging the rail in major races so you'll be able to move and accelerate without being boxed in. Big congratulations though he really sowed his talent. The last 600 M was crazy!
The best tactical race? No, not at all. Not only did he get tripped up and almost fall in a big crowd but once again despite superb form he lacked the confidence and tactical ability to get into the front at the bell. He made up a good deal and closed very well but his positioning only gives him a shot at the podium every time out. I am very happy for him but these are facts. If he had the confidence of a Cheptegei or Ethiopian, it would be a different story because he is really in tremendous form.
grant would of won if he wasnt boxed in with 300 to go...
...and the Seahawks "would of" been back to back Super Bowl champions if Russel Wilson didn't throw an INT at the goal line.
Grant knows how to play the game. Not getting boxed in is a learned skill, and can be improved with practice. One could argue that "ability to not get boxed in" (however you would quantify that) is as important to winning an Olympic 10,000 meters as is lactate threshold, VO2 Max, or closing 200 speed.
