She is very talented: however, she isn't Superwoman. There are hundreds of females who WONT MEDAL that's running high mileage and no other known female runner who could run sub 31mins off 30 mpw.
Count me as one who doesn’t believe she only runs 30 miles per week. She probably did that coming off of injury, mixed with a high volume of cross training, as they all do. She may not put in 80-90, but she probably gets a kick out of people thinking she still only runs 30. She recovers too fast from her races to still be at that low volume.
Why do you guys keep repeating 30 miles/wk?
It was “30-40 miles” two-and-one-half months ago back at Bryan Clay (when the RW article came out, with up to 12-13 mile long runs.)
And if you knew anything about training, like the 80/20 or even 90/10 ‘intensity rules’, 30-40 miles a week of just running is more than enough to work in 20% of her aerobic conditioning being high intensity running.

lol, what exactly did she gain by lying about her mileage.
When is the last time she openly talked about her weekly mileage? I’m sure it was true at one point.
I wouldn't be surprised if Weini threatened the AR in Paris. She showed she's not afraid to go for it at Worlds X by going out with the entire dominating Kenyan squad for over 8.5 km. Good weather and a fast race Weini goes 29:56 to 30:05.
I don’t see that. Honestly, if Valby and Sweitzer hadn’t already run two fast 5K races previously, I don’t think Kelati beats either of them. Kelati made the most of having the fresh legs at the end of the 10K. Congrats to all three. Great race.
I would love to see that. I watched her run right behind Sifan at Portland to pick up the 14:36 5k. Beating Schweitzer and Valby in the last lap shows she wants it.
How many Kenyans and Ethiopians will be in medal contention at Paris on 30mpw running?
Silly. Valby shouldn’t be expected to be in medal contention. Unreasonable expectation of her.
You missed the point. It isn't that Valby will be in medal contention at Paris but that no top distance athlete will be succeeding there on her kind of training.

Here we go again! For one thing, Valby isn’t an Ethiopian, Kenyan, or a man from “the past 60 years.”
It’s so funny how stuck some people are in their ways of thinking. Learn to adapt and evolve like Parker Valby does. I did. I’ve been training like her since November. While the rest of you are crying, we’re getting faster and not getting injured.

It was “30-40 miles” two-and-one-half months ago back at Bryan Clay, as reported in Runners World.
Sure…it sounds like she’s very gradually building mileage over time. Wasn’t it 25-30 last year? I really don’t expect her to be a 30-40 mile per week athlete in the years to come. I mentioned this a few days ago, but I don’t think she took running very seriously in high school, and college training was probably too much too soon, hence the injuries. She seems to have figured some things out since then. She probably hasn’t worked up to the mileage of the top athletes, but that just means she’s further away from her ceiling than they are. She was the youngest runner in the 10K by nearly 4 years. Time is on her side.

Weekly mileage keeps being thrown around on this website as the be-all metric for the determination of training volume. But for today’s pro’s, running mileage is just one fraction of total training load. That is more so the case for female pros than male pros.
A pro has more allotted time to train, than a collegiate going to class. But that means more time for strength and prehab work, rather than just more time available to run. Judicious strength and prehab work is what allows them to stay in the game.
Training load is just one piece of the total pie of available ‘energy units’, a term a coach once taught Ryan Hall. There are so many ‘energy units’ available within an allotted 24hr period. Social media can be a positive or negative consumer of one’s energy units.
So many of you are getting stuck on the "25-30 mpw." She's not just running X amount of mpw. Many of you are underestimating (or ignoring) the work she does on the arc trainer, elliptical, and in the pool. My guess is that either you haven't tried it, aren't working hard enough, or just don't know what kind of workouts to do (I've seen runners try to swim!). Through my own experience, I've been amazed at the night and day difference in how I feel and perform compared to the 23 years I've been doing things the traditional way.
Judicious strength and prehab work is what allows them to stay in the game.…it can improve their strength, and improve their running efficiency to effectively make them faster.
Valby will become a more efficient runner if issues with her mechanics can be further ironed out. She used to have significant asymmetric hip drop, and she would tilt her head back and to the side, for instance. There is still room for improvement, and she may need to spend more of her energy units in ‘fixing’ things, than the typical seasoned pro, like a Letesenbet Gidey, if she wants to compete with the best in the world, rather than just top American.

Are you an international level athlete, or just another recreational runner?

There may be additional forms of training that pros adopt but how many international level distance athletes run only 25-40mpw?

As stated earlier, you don’t actually know how many miles Valby is running.
One of Valby’s competitors at the games will be this year’s winner of the NYC Half-marathon, who sometimes runs 60 miles/wk, but that is not all of the training volume the 34yr-old Euro Champ completes in a week.

She will not be facing her at the Olympics if Valby enters only the 10000m.
