Tim Hutchings is a hack. Fastest mile time in 20 years and he spends the first minute after the finish prattling on about how that should be a dose of humility for Ingebrigtsen
And Hoare with a HUGE Oceania/National record 3.47.48 - sensational.
He could not have been better pace-wise there - 56.5ish, 1.53.5ish, 2.49.4 at 1209m, this was exactly how he was going to break that mark. Again shows how tough sub 3.47 is and also that ER of Cram. Crazy to imagine Cram being 3+ seconds down at the bell and mowing down Jakob for a tight victory.
Either way hugely impressive, gutsy front running.
I have to say...do you think Jakob has more daylight? It looks like he cannot close much faster than that. God, just thinking that Cram could close in 53 off a similar pace...that is crazy.
I think Jakob has a lot to gain on not front running the whole mile. With stronger pacers, and without having to run around the whole field to get a good position he most def breaks the record.

Yeah I am with you on this but still hard to know. When I saw the splits unfolding I was thinking that this could not be more perfect for him. Like for him to run 3.44/5 I think 1.53 low/mid at 800 and 2.49 low/mid at the bell is what he has to be. That's where he was today and I was expecting with a lap to go he would run mid 3.45. I think the wiggle room comes from him not having run too many super quick miles yet (sub 2.50 at the bell). I think if he were to run another in 3-4 week off the same pace he could run mid to high 45's but I think based off today I don't see anything remotely close to the WR which it seems almost unfathomable to comprehend is over 3 seconds away.

I think the second lap made it very tough. He ran 1:52.9 for the last 809 leading 600 of that outright. He could potentially chop a little bit down with pacemaking to 1200 and a stronger second lap. Feels like 3:46.1-2 is the top level at this exact moment. That being said expect him to be fitness-wise a second or more better at his peak.
Didn’t really bring it up but very solid performance by Telahun Haile Bekele of Ethiopia. He looks like a contender for the medals even finishing pretty far back in Rome. The sort of tactics and closing speed will play in Eugene.
