He improved and got $1M. Sounds like a better deal than those other 2 got. Does a contract make you faster?
No, a contract raises your expectations. How do you not understand this?
I expect more of a guy being paid $1million dollars to run than guys being paid $0 to run.
If all you’re doing is arguing in defense of trash-talking Hunter, fine, carry on. I can’t see why anyone would care about your expectations.
As others have pointed out, there’s no reason to assume he would be running any faster had he gone to Oregon. It’s easy to imagine him being outkicked by his younger and more talented teammate, Teare. As others have pointed out, he’s running much better than other recent sub-4 HSers like Slagowski and Maton.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t see Drew Hunter run and think “Now there’s an incredible talent.” Never have. I don’t see him becoming smooth enough at 56/lap to run 3:30 and if he ever breaks 13:00 he’ll be about the “chunkiest” (i.e. normal muscle mass) and ungainliest runner to ever do so. He was an early bloomer who received pretty serious and knowledgeable guidance from an early age, and I say he made the right choice to capitalize financially on his early success.
I may sound fatalistic about Hunter’s prospects, but I wish him the best. One poster suggested he should move to the marathon or ultras, and I think this would be a big mistake. However, I do wonder if his best shot at making the Olympic team is at 10k, even if in absolute scoring-table type terms he’s just as strong at 5k/1500.
