Simple solution - eliminate the charity runners and make everyone qualify like 20+ years ago. There will be no more worrying about what the "cutoff" will be because all runners who hit their age group standard knew as soon as they crossed the finish line if they qualified or not.

Just curious where people will do their Virtual race? Will they run the course anyways sometime that week? There are lots of street lights so run at midnight avoiding traffic (and avoid September likely heat)? How is it a virtual Boston if you run on a flat bike path?

I've tentatively mapped out a point-to-point course in Cincinnati that ends at my house. It starts on a bike trail for ~19 1/2 miles, but leaves the trail at that point. It is ever so slightly down hill for those bike trail miles, but it has 3 significant climbs in the last 10K, at 20, 23, and 26 miles. I'll ask my wife or son to drive me to the start.
It's not Boston, but it's P2P and has late hills.
I plan to run it on Labor Day (09/07), because I'm registered for a tiny marathon 2 1/2 weeks later.
I'm optimistic, so I've already bought my plane ticket for April 2021. It's refundable if they postpone or cancel again.

Not sure if it will happen now with covid, but there's a half marathon within the time window where I live. I plan on doing that half twice so that aid stations will be available and some competition to help with early pacing. If that half is cancelled, I'll go to a local park with a 6 mile loop and do it for 4.367 times. The reason why I would do it on a loop course is the logistics of setting up fluids will be easier. Just put up two tables 3 miles from each other. Now the optimal time to do it in September will be early morning. So starting around 3:00 in the morning.
Curious....has anyone or know of anyone who's broken down qualification numbers for 2021? Now that we know all 2020 qualifiers will get another shot at registering along with those that have already qualified for the 2021 marathon. I know that it's very likely the 2021 cut-off will increase, but I'm interested in seeing current total qualifying numbers with bother years added.
