Some data scientists were noticing a drop in IFR in some states that were reporting big spikes in positives and hospitalizations. This drop started in July and did not correlate to any logical explanation like a new drug being used or a big shift in demographics. Then, over the weekend, Texas found about 700 extra deaths to push their total from just over 5,000 to just over 5,700. This accounts for the drop in IFR in Texas. Texas is now using death certificates to report fatalities instead of reports from local and regional health authorities. While it is good that Texas came clean and updated the fatality statistics, moving forward, Texas will no longer be posting real time fatality statistics and will instead be adjusting the totals as death certificates come in. This will take the shock out of the next few weeks as fatalities have been spiking and will only get worse before the benefits of the state wide mask order are seen. This is coming at a time when the governor is pushing to get schools to reopen with face to face teaching. Keeping people from knowing in real time what the fatality statistics are looking like in Texas helps keep people from pushing to keep schools closed or exclusively online.
