Because of my PF problem from last fall, I didn't decide to run this St. Jude race until January. 11 months before the race, all the hotel rooms in Downtown Memphis had been already sold out. So I decided to book a room in the "Medical district." (People who have been to Memphis know where it is.) I told myself, "no big deal. I did this in 2009."
Well, things have changed a lot in 10 years. Most of the parking garages and lots in downtown are unusable, because they happen to sit in the middle of marathon course. A few on the edge of the course were occupied pretty quickly by 10k and 5k participants who started one hour early. I had to drive around a lot to find an open space on the street to park my car. And then, I tried to walk to the start corral only to find the access was blocked because of the 10k race. I finally reached Corral M. I didn't know there was such a thing as Corral M, but then I had to walk through a lot of non-runners to get to my Corral (B). Given people at the front start first, shouldn't they have the easiest access to their corral? Anyway, I managed to get to the back of my corral 30 seconds before the start.
Then the gun went off. Since I didn't get to do any warm up, I thought it might not be a bad idea to start slow. Except... some of those people in the back are way too slow they had no business lining up in Corral B. And on top of that, one of my shoe strings got untied a few minutes into the race. So I had to step aside to retie the string. (I had forgotten to check my strings before the start. After all, I had only 30 seconds to get ready.) Shortly after going through the first mile in 8:49, I passed the 3:40 pace team. Shortly after mile 2, I passed the 3:35 pace team. I passed the 3:30 pace team around mile 5, and then finally passed the 3:25 pace team after mile 10. The only problem I had on the course was the confusion at hydration stations.I had no idea who had water and who had sports drink, and had to take whatever was handed to me. This is the only race I have this problem. All the other races figured out this issue long time ago.
After the race, I tried to get the results. I was told that no half marathon results were ready. (This was about 2 hours 15 minutes after the race had started.) So I decided to take a long walk to get back to my car. But my ordeal was not over. Because of the parking map provided by the organizer misidentified the "Green Zone" (the place where all roads remain open), dozens, if not hundreds of cars were stuck in intersections. It took me a while to figure out how to go around all the congestion to get back to my hotel.
I managed to run 1:41 and change in all the chaos and finish 8th out of 354 in my AG. It was my first top 10 finish in Memphis. I guess the competition is much easier in half than in marathon. I also moved up from 379th @10k to 317th @ 15k to finish in 289th OA out of 9772. Now I have to look for a room for the next year so that I won't have to go through this misery again.
P.S. They had to move the expo to Southaven, MS because the convention center was closed for renovation. The traffic to Southaven was atrocious, and it took about an extra hour to get there. And then, once we were inside, we had to wait for much longer than usual to get our bag and shirt. At least we know this was a temporary problem that we won't have to worry about next year.
