But he’s just not elite. How a race organizer establishes who gets to run in their “elite field” isn’t a regulated term and is often pretty weak times, especially for large 10k races. Even someone like me, with no social media, gets to run in “elite” fields at road championship designated races (and have won small races being referred to as the “first elite male”), but I am able to keep perspective and I’m not an elite runner. Also, even if someone were to win a gold medal, it doesn’t excuse being a smug prick. Maybe it’s less offensive than when a barista with a YouTube channel is a smug prick, but it’s never ok.
well that comes with the territory of having an open ended term such as 'elite'. An organiser can set the time threshold at whatever they want. If you start defining elite as something way higher than it is now it is a slippery slope to BAs selection policy of only medal hopefuls. Did you want the British champs threshold for it to be 28 mins because only 6 brits have done that this year. where do you draw the line?
Again, I think fenton is a smarmy prick
there were around 80 "elite" male finishers at the race and in the womens "elite" field was a lady trotting around in 50mins - "elite" numbers for Great Fun Run series are for anyone who emails in and has a PB of sub 31:30 - they get a free bib and bag drop but not others benefits. the invited athletes will have had a hotel and possibly travel expenses - FENTON would have had to pay for this himself
there were a few pro runners there trying to earn a bit of cash or qualify to run for GB but runners like Fenton are just there to make up the numbers and hunt for a PB. hes again failed in his quest to run under 30mins so undoubtedly there will be another attempt in a couple of weeks
OMTIU just called out a lad for a screenshot off his Strava graphic that is 11 seconds faster than his chip time over 10k. He wasn’t announcing it as a big Sub Xx Marker or anything just a PB. They need to get real.
think the thread missed big talker elson get packed in by his physio AGAIN
3:39 this week in some random German race
i dont understand why he puts himself through all this travelling around europe looking for obscure races where the fast guys are running.
this season, he is in really poor form. there was a BMC in Birmingham which was won in 3:39 - no one is going to magically improve there 1500m time by 5secs~ when theyve already raced in pacemaked races in good conditions. why not go to Birmingham and actually try to win a race and a bit of prize money. i see India did, and she won her 1500m in 4:09
he really is deluded if he thinks by travelling around europe hes suddenly going to pluck a 3:35 out of thin air. the truth is re is way off where he used to be, needs to do some more 800ms and re-hire his old coach. clearly, under Hobdell, he is not getting the training partners or sessions needed to be a competitive 1500m runner

I understand and accept having “elite fields” should be broad and not defined as race organizers want a large field for these events for a number of reasons. It doesn’t really matter, I think we are on the same page. Fenton is a decent runner, good enough to run in be top 50, but also beaten by a whole lot of runners who unlike Fenton have day jobs, otherwise normal lives, and no YouTube channel where they show case that they are a smarmy prick.

Not only is the price ridiculous, the idea of Yowana coaching at all is ridiculous. The guy runs pro-level mileage without the results. He’s clearly got an unwarranted level of confidence in his running knowledge, but his videos that talk about actual training show that he has a long way to go on that front. The guy doesn’t seem very good at taking criticism, so if he sees this I’m sure there will be a two hour video ranting about the haters on Let’s Run, but he honestly has no business coaching other people.

I think it is a good thing that day2day runners with full time jobs who work hard to get to sub 31:30 be given a bit of nice treatment. As you say, when we see fenton posting all about it saying hes racing against and olympic gold winner and being a wanker about it, it blunts the nicety look from the outside. Let's not let one smarmy prick ruin it for all the full time workers who get the special treatment for putting in the hours into their hobby. If anyone thinks that's a bad thing they're running on pure jealousy that they are slow
these organisers make enough money charging £40-50 for a bloody 10k depending on when you sign up. I think its a good thing they're using it to giving back to the everyday runner in a big 'elite field' that is putting the work in. I do agree it is a shame that fenton makes it looks like a bad thing though
Time for our weekly running channel check in to see how everyone's favourite experts, Sarah and Tom, have been training.
I wonder whether The Running Channel presenters just kinda don't like running anymore, or if they are obliged to "stay in their lane" so they can continue to appeal to the same set of runners without improving too much to be unrelatable?
For example, Tom is paid to run but if he improved he wouldn't be appealing to the parkrun walkers he currently inspires. Same for Sarah's appeal to 4hr marathoners.

all a big ploy to diversify the "if you run, you're a runner" slogan.

Tom genuinely hates running. Which is fine, not everyone has to like what I like. But it's insulting to the viewers of their channel that he gets wheeled out as some some of running enthusiast. At least most of the other presenters seem to actually want to run and improve a bit.
Sarah enjoys running, but has no idea how to train consistently or how to control intensity. She went all in on her Rotterdam build to get sub 3.30, but now she's totally cooked and has lost anything she gained during that build and then some. Which is fine, not everyone has to have a detailed understanding of training theory, but then it's insulting to viewers when she makes podcasts and videos on topics as if she's in any way qualified to advise people on how to train. She answers viewer questions on training on the podcast FFS!
Is it really too much to ask that presenters on the running channel 1) actually like running and 2) can practice what they preach in terms of training advice?!
Anyone seen Göran's latest post where he is trying to justify his "App" subscription. Where the app is nothing else, but glorified Spreadsheet and the app is clearly been done with help of wibe-coding. Nothing wrong with using AI, but some transparency would help.

Those AI coded apps and websites are so funny because they are SOOOOO obvious within half a second, there is so so many of them out there at the moment and you see them and all credibility about how they've "worked hard to create this" is gone.
I like Goran and his content most of the time and even agree with his message on not having to be sucked into the scam that is the gel market, but I think to have such a simple and poor product which has been cobbled together poorly using AI it does take away from what was otherwise a good message.

Last week I filled out a “tip” form for a pro triathlete who claimed a Strava 10k split from the BolderBoulder 10k as a legitimate time as opposed to the actual result to see what OMTIU would do and if he would “investigate”. The difference was about 50 seconds between the strava split and the race result.
Surely he would hold a professional athlete with sponsors and following to the highest of standards right? I mean if this random average Joe gets called out for a mere 11 second discrepancy then so would this guy.

Well to no one’s surprise, it’s been crickets lol
Does anyone call that guy, or does he delete any criticism? If he had any integrity he could be an internet folk hero by taking aim at pros and influencers, but instead he chooses to be cucked and punches down at random people.
Guy who runs that account genuinely has something wrong with him
everyone knows who the guy is running the account now right? like he's been ID'd and is nobody like calling him out or giving him crap on his own personal social media? surprised if not. but regardless, very much agree with you...the lad must have a mental illness if he's still this obsessed with maintaining an instagram account to call out running times of influencers and nitpicking race results. truly a weird thing to do and continue on with, especially once it's been revealed you're the looney behind it..is nobody bashing the guy or is he just that off the rails that he doesnt even care people know he's behind the account. i'd be quite embarrassed to be uncovered as the maniac who is fixating on marathon times of people that no one should really care about given they're not pros and trying to call out 'integrity'. truly pathetic and the guy has nothing better to do than double down on his silly ig account?
