I come from a running family, so I grew up spending time around my local running community at road races and club events. I have always found that runners, on average, are kinder and more intelligent than most other hobby groups.
So why are the discussion forums on the largest competitive running website so ridiculously toxic? Every thread is filled with hateful, cynical rhetoric, and I honestly can't think of a worse place on the internet. Does anyone have some insight?
Why do wokes hate free speech?
FWIW, I now limit my use of the site and the reason is precisely because of annoying, toxic posters like this one from a POS called FJB.
Truth - I now don't come on the site anymore just because of toxic garbage like this. I would think that those who run the site would want to be aware of the consequences of allowing jerks like FJB ruin their site.

I might be one of the "wokes"--though to me not a term of derogation--and I read and appreciated the op opinion, and I do not object to seeing your biased generalization. Free Speech, hoorah! Now what is that you are saying?!
He is just asking why the left hates the 1st Amendment and free expression. It's a legitimate question and one I ask all of the time.
Here is an idea! Participate in the threads that interest you and ignore the ones that don't.
If opposing opinions upset you and you want a safe space try Instagram.
I feel compelled to check out things like that to see if they are racist, anti Semitic, or misinformation. I have this notion that the spread of things like that matter, so feel compelled to do so.
In terms of exchanging ideas or debating, assuming a position in which you declare F_K your opponent and using a devicive term to refer to them is hardly conducive to an unfettered exchange. And frankly, that is not their intent.
Have other things to do with my time and energy and this had become a drain for the reasons outline herein.
Like the original poster, I thought that the runners were always a little bit special. It as neat to be in a sport that like swimming, was supposed to full of "smart kids."
Either because of habit or the mods, the forum often violates every rule of logic, particularly ad hominem attacks. Someone posted on here that kids read LRC. The are many proud posters here who see nothing wrong with calling others a jacka**. Quality arguments? Nice models here.
I dont' expect many posters to make it to law school or pass rigourous college rhetoric classes, but the misplaced arrogance is astounding. If you want to see strawman arguments, arguments from consequences, "et tu" arguments, appeal to irrelavant authority, guilt by association, circular reasoning, and appeals to the bandagon you have come to the right place.
I wonder if education today is all about learning the buzzwords and the sweat involved in learning rhetoric has gone by the wayside. I need to thank my English teacher, who ground down this math major. Virtue signaling in my essays counted for nothing.
Half of the problem is the name-calling. You can make a board where it is simply not allowed. If your argument can't be explained clearly, mods should make it clear that you can go to other message boards to practice personal attacks. Ad hominem attacks used to mean you lost the argument.
By the way, runners are still on the whole pretty clever. A board built on runners has a great chance to become a great board.
