Boulder is overrated. I want to move.

I feel like traffic is only bad in Boulder if you’re a commuter (or joining the commuters to get out of Boulder at the end of the workday eg to go to Costco in Superior)

Snakes, what kind of snakes... When I lived in Tucson I used to bike home at night from the U of A rec center. There was stretch of trail where past about Feb 28th, is infested with snakes. I think I encountered 11 rattlesnakes just lying across the pavement on a 5 mile stretch one night.

I see more North Face and Patagonia than the shaggy stuff you talk about.

Pretty much everything you said is horsesh!t. It almost never snows in Boulder in September, rarely more than a trace amount of rain. The average high is 78-degrees, and low of 48-degrees. Sunset is between 7:32pm on Sep01 and 6:56pm on Sep30.

September is probably the BEST month to run in Boulder.

If you lived on campus, you absolutely don't have to drive to get your run in, and don't have to dodge cars. Geezus, the city has more pedestrian underpasses and bike trails than almost anywhere on the planet, so you almost never have to cross a road.

And they are building more bicycle/pedestrian underpasses this year and up until 2021.

It snowed every Sept I was there, and the description earlier of nice Augusts turning to heck by late September is dead on, for me.

And it's DRY: I learned about Carmex when I moved there.

And the f*cking WIND. I was from a Midwest tornado state, where it was always windy. But in Boulder, gusts of like 100 mph. Not infrequently. Are you kidding me? Ten inches of snow at 10 p.m., wind, dry as a bone when headed to class at 8 a.m. That's not Earth, that's Mars.

This said, Boulder is Disneyland if you're from a flyover state and college-aged. It only takes a couple of years, though, until you see through the veil. And this was in the 80s, which was probably the last time Boulder WAS Boulder. I remember everyone complaining about the Californians moving there, and I could see it in the aggressive traffic uptick. I'm IN California now, and yeah, the traffic is similar. But the weather is better, the winds slower, the mountains cooler (and higher), and the attractive women aren't just 19, or headcases if they're older.

And WHAT is with all the psychedelic drugs in Boulder? Everywhere I'd go, there was someone flipping out on LSD, mushrooms, some crazy-ass thing. Sure, there's meth and opioids everywhere now, but really. Do you need all that?

I used to bike to UofA from Old Fort Lowell near Fort Lowell Park and back every day.

Where did you see the snakes?

I lived there in the early 1980's. One time I headed up the Sabino Canyon trail right before dusk, and it got dark much, much faster than I'd though it would. I was on high alert watching every step trying to avoid stepping on snakes, and had a scare when a big tarantula popped up right in front of me. I made a big leap over it and set a record for getting back to the pavement. That was the last time that I ran up that trail, day or night.

What about them? They're "not much else" despite all the Insta hype. One has a good miler who could make the team for Doha but hasn't been on a senior USA team yet. The best active marathoner in town (by PR) is Jeffrey Eggleston, who doesn't train exclusively with either group. Same for the second best active marathoner in town (by PR), Mick Iacofano, who is actually set to join another training group… in Boise. These groups have proven adept at developing 2:16-2:26 marathoners, and it's great that there's more money in the sport to support athletes at that level, but there's little reason that they shouldn't be able to develop careers outside of running while pursuing their best performances. Heck, Brogan Austin, who apparently will be joining Tinmen, achieved better times training solo around a full-time job.

20' to Horsetooth? If you're talking about driving up behind the reservoirs and such, yes that adds 10' to 15'. But the east side horsetooth stuff is accessible within several minutes if you're on the west side. You can run to to it from a reasonable number of locations.

Feels like we have different ideas of horrible traffic. At rush hour on a fee roads (college, harmony, etc) traffic is bad. During most hours or most non prime roads traffic isn't bad...aside from fairly high stoplight density. Normal trip during non peak hours from I25 to my place near Taft and horsetooth (far west) is 15' avg. 10' if I nail the lights. Same heading north. 10' avg to get to old town using Taft/Mulberry.

Food scene in my mind is excellent. The breweries are good. National chains can be ignored. Literally several dozen solid locally run places in or near old town.

When I say trail system, I'm also thinking trails in the city. They are great trails for training. So are many of the roads. Lots of good long, flat roads with uninterrupted sections and due to bike infrastructure they are wide, unlike running on some 50mph country road with no shoulder.

Does Boulder have noticeably better trail running and a prettier, more accessible outdoors? Yes. That's not a debate (Well maybe if you really really like water). But fort Collins just owns it in every other area for me: people, traffic, culture, infrastructure, cost of living, etc.

The community and crowd in fort Collins is also top notch. Obviously a person experience, but the town is vibrant, energetic, has an excellent dating scene, and I have found the people here in general to be extremely friendly people. Combine that with downtown and the cities top tier infrastructure for cycling/commuting/getting around town and that's a pretty winning combination in my book.

While not super relevant here...FoCos cycling community is unreal. I no of nowhere in the nation that is close. All kinds of cheap, grassroots races. Excellent camaraderie and support, great rides for different abilities, and some serious cool initiatives, i.e. stuff set up you can be rescued by someone if you triple flat and support, discounts, etc. If you are involved in a crash.

One man's opinion, but to me this is a pretty damn good city.

Seriously, tho, what's your take on Jessup Farm? I've seen their bottles locally and am curious. Odell might be my favorite CO brewery, better than NB of course and even Avery. Blasphemy!

Weldwerks is the best but it’s in....wait for it... Greeley of all places. Never would have thought anything out there would be worth visiting.

And actually it isn’t really worth visiting, which is why I buy it in Boulder

Nice, good looking out. I keep waiting for a Greeley poster to come on here and dump on Boulder, Ft. Collins, Denver, and Colorado Springs for being full of conceited, rich, prissy runners and explain all the ways that Greeley is the true home to blue collar runners in CO. Until Pueblo runner chimes in… ?
