Damn, Tollefson bouncing around. Geez, he must be delirious or nasty fit.
One of those extended podium kind of things? Podiun is top 3. The rest is BS.
2nd consecutive 3rd place for Tim at UTMB. Predicted him for top American. Smart and consistent, doesn't get caught up in the hype. Now let's see if the US ultra media acknowledges him as he deserves or repeat their past mistakes like they did at WS 2016 and UTMB 2016.
Clue: Jim Walsmley and Zach Miller get you mire clicks and retweets.
Tim's just too square and doesn't take risks like Walmsley and Miller so not as marketable. Phenomenal performance, running for 3rd is not as exciting as running for 1st.
Running for 1st and blowing up two thirds into the race isn't exciting, it's just dumb.
I'd imagine that going onto the biggest stage in the trail ultra world and delivering results, year after year, should be pretty marketable. Let alone the fact that Tim finished under CR.
Maybe Tollefson need to start talking trash in interviews instead of being his usual intelligent, articulate, call-it-like-it-is sort if guy.
D'Haene ran a total of 50 miles in the last 2 weeks...he knows how to rest.
Most Americans are overtrained.
I think this is a great result for Walmsley. Battled back from adversity. Very fast times this year. He did much better than expected on what is likely nota course best suited to his strengths. I'm sure people will still find fault but that is to be expected.
Lol, anyone see the pictures of Walmsley at the end? The man looks like he lost 25 lbs from the start to finish ........and went through Chemo in this race. He apparently gave it his all.

not correct. Kilian is 4-3 against Francois when it comes to ultras, and one of those races neither won, but came 3rd (Kilian) 4th (Francois). The 2012 transvulcania won by Dakota Jones, Andrew Symonds was second.
Also the Corsica trail GR20 FKT is in Francois' name, having broken the record earlier established by Kilian. Of course this isn't a race and not really comparable, since it's just the one competing the other.
but anyway, Francois is definitely (maybe the most) fantastic on mountainous 100milers. I think Western States doesn't really suit him that well, being all that flat, as he said of the The North Face Australia 100k, that it was just too fast for him. Was 14th on the 2015 edition, might have been injured though, don't remember.
As much for me I thought they raced against each other only once before this UTMB. Both guys are tremendous athletes, and D'Haene isn't even a full time runner, which make his victory even more impressive.
Well Western States might not be the best race for François but he can still win it or being on the podium, Hardrock is definetly a good race for him a lot of pretty steep climbs. Us ultra races should be more open to top elite foreign runners.
Otherwise I don't like Walmsley's character that much, but he did well for his first UTMB would be nice to see him back next year.
Amazing how short-sighted NIKE is losing Tollefson, Miller, basically disappearing from the sport overnight by not re-investing in its athletes.
I think the trail community knew NIKE wasn't in it for the long haul, and maybe best as their business and stock crash.

Jim probably didn't eat enough and didn't take care of his basic needs at these aid stations.
5th place is a lot better than I thought he would end up with. But let's not forget he was 70 minutes behind the winner. That is a lot.

If you look at what D'Haene did last year, lowering Kilian's GR20 record in Corsica, you have to think that when he's feeling good he's the favorite because that's a tough, tough course. And he did it at 30 versus early twenties for Kilian. It's great that Kilian could have such a finish here after going up Everest in the same year.

Was Walmsley in 5th actually under the CR after all then? Must have been a fast year, but he can't have been all that arrogant if he **did** run as fast as he said he would; just others ran faster

From what I read, the course was slightly modified. 167 km vs 171.
They ran an altered course due to weather conditions so the times are incomparable to the CR.
Can we please stop all the Walmley talk now? He's a good ultrarunner, 5th at UTMB is no joke. But he is not revolutionary or the best ultrarunner the world has ever seen.
The kind of talk last year after his Western States (outside of the top 10) finish was crazy. His R2R2R was impressive, yeah. His training is impressive, yeah. But no one gives a damn about training if you don't perform in the big races. And Jim has never performed big (as in what you would expect from his training) in big races: DNF 100 km Worlds 2015, blow-up WS 2016, DNF WS 2017, minor blow-up UTMB 2017. His only win over 100 km or more was at Tarawera 2016 against an ageing and injured Jonas Buud.
