Serial Cheater at Marine Corps Marathon?

Wow the list is getting kinda long

What % of Boston qualifiers that run each year do you think are cheats? I used to think very low but now I am thinking maybe 100 a year have been frauds. Still less than 1% but wow.

The strangest thing about the Troy Price story to me is why it was ever even a story. Nothing but a self promoting article on an IT guy who is pretty boring. Why run the article at all? Odd.

There are other non-running achievements if you google him. It seems he is somewhat of a big shot in the university and in the town of Troy. He won some kind of keep kids safe from internet award or something. Who knows what kind of stories his telling about other parts of his life.

My question is are people in small town this gullible? Or people like him are so rare that they don't know how to vet someone like him.

Even more overlooked than tennis was the "unprecedented" knee injuries. That, in and of itself, is quite an accomplishment. Lucky for him he found a sport that is easy on the knees.

"Run hard as you can as long as you can."

He sounds like someone who doesn't even run but had to describe what running is like.

I see that he received a Masters in Liberal Arts from Harvard. I'm sure that could be verified.

I'm pretty sure "Masters of Liberal Arts from Harvard" = "Masters of Liberal Arts from Harvard Extension Online Clown College". I don't think there's such a degree from the real graduate school, and I don't think Troy University is a big feeder school for them.

As one who does an occasional long run with Mister Rossi, I am offended and appalled by your inclusion of this man of integrity with your Gallery of Rogues. Admittedly, I barely know the man, but I have paced him to a 14:30 5k and know that he is a man of upstanding character and integrity and does not deserve to be included in your list of cheaters.

So to you, sir, I say, good riddance and good day! If you were here in person, I would descend my penny farthing, remove the glove from my hand without disturbing my powdered wig, and slap you in the face with it for besmirching the name of such a man of integrity.

Apparently Dr. Greg Price ( the Troy AL one) is an accomplished author as well, with four published titles:

His books are available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Although, for some reason, I was unable to find them at either site. Or on Google. Or the Library of Congress Catalog. Must be really obscure titles, if they're not even listed in the LOC catalog.

Regarding the possibility that there are many cheaters out there and there is an entitlement mentality: I am in my 60s. Finished in the top ten at the San Francisco Half Marathon last winter. There were two names ahead of me in the results for runners I have known for years and who have never beaten me. I never saw one of them during the race and the other one I passed in the first mile and he never came back on me. I bumped into one of them at the grocery store a few weeks later and asked about their race (the two of them are friends and finished together). The response - at eight miles (which was a half mile from the finish line) they went into a bar and got a drink and then jogged over to the finish line. The reason - they needed subseeded times for Bay to Breakers. At least they did not claim their awards.

Sorry for all the posts, but this Dr. Price guy just fascinates me with his web of tales.

So, one of his publications actually does exist, but it's a 16 page pamphlet, not a book. Dr. Price's contribution is a few pages of gobbledygook.

In his bio, with also learn that Dr. Price is a recipient of the International Laureate for his work for promoting child welfare through technology. He also has three provisional technology patents and is the founder and director of the Alabama Computer Forensics Institute (a U.S. Department of Justice funded research and training facility).

Worryingly, the Alabama Computer Forensics Institute seems to actually exist, and says it provides training for law enforcement, internet safety workshops for kids, examination of electronic evidence, and receives government grants. Yet Dr. Price's only professed qualifications are a foreign languages degree and a correspondence Masters in Liberal Arts. I'm all for self-trained people making a name for themselves in the IT field, but shouldn't someone directing child internet safety programs have some background in psychology/psychiatry? Shouldn't someone teaching evidence investigation have some law enforcement or legal background?

And how does an IT security expert not understand the concept that any claim can be Googled?

That's not exactly surprising, considering his impressive gait. Also, he never missed a mat - ever. I really don't understand why there are all these Rossi "jokes".

Similarly, Price is known to drop 15 min 5k's in the middle of long distance races, and thus doesn't need to cheat for a 3:30 mary. Not his fault that not all mats worked last time.

How many liars and cheaters are out there? There seems to be a new thread every week or so. To pull the original MCM course cutter needle from the haystack is amazing. To have another guy with the same name and so many ridiculous claims is either an astronomical coincidence or there are a lot of runners doing this type of stuff.

Some years ago, a guy I knew was accused of course cutting a marathon (Las Vegas). Looking into it, I was able to pull the splits from the entire field and wrote a little program to look for anomalous splits. As I recall, the algorithm was looking for a split time 10% faster than the next fastest split or some such. Out of the full field (~3500 runners) there was something on the order of 100 finishers who had clearly cut the course. That course had a few miles of out-and-back late in the race, so it was particularly easy to take a shortcut and may not be representative. Almost all anomalous splits were for back markers, though there were a few who were in BQ range.
