Hold on here - as the LRC story on the main page points out, this isn't over - THE RESULT IS LISTED AS PENDING.

All the other race are listed as official.

I would bet $22 that this ends up as a win for Gabe. It's just too ridiculous otherwise.

Not completely unprecedented. In a slightly different scenario, Anthuan Maybank (originally 5th placer in the 1996 Olympic Trials 400m) was disqualified for a lane violation. They put him in the relay pool anyway and when Michael Johnson and Butch Reynolds couldn't run, he anchored the US 4 x 400m team to gold.

Jesus, if true, this is disgusting. I run because I love the sport of running, the people and the honest form of competition. I can toe the line with the best of them and test my mettle if I want to. What other sport lets you do that? I tried cycling for a while, but I didn't like the bureaucracy of USA Cycling. This was a major turn off, the athletes being at the mercy of the sports governing body, making decisions based on...well, I don't actually know. It was frustrating enough to stop racing in USAC sanctioned events.

It's a big blow to see this shit in running. To know how USATF and Nike are intimately involved with eachother; to see this happen, makes you wonder - what else is USATF turning a blind-eye to? I'm not buying any more Nikes, they're too big for their own good and have lost sight of the honesty and good in the sport of running all for the sake of their huge egos and a little more green.

given that this is pending, I'm starting to see a scenario how this could have happened -

salazar is 100% infuriated - he and some Nike corporate goons are at the protest table screaming bloody murder, 'I will have you fired" and that sort of thing. Since the NIke goons have a point - this is a gray area issue since there was clearly an impeding by Gabe - the guys at the protest desk say god%^*&it if I kick this upstairs will you stop threatening us?

So it has been kicked upstairs to some other USATF committee and there is stands today, race pending.

Is that possible given USATF rules, of which I am blissfully ignorant?

This is clearly a case where the best option would have been "You know honey, I'm gonna stick with my maiden name"

to finish the thought - maybe upholding the DQ was really just saying 'let's let the guys in suits at USATF decide this tomorrow with cooler heads, not us in the heat of the moment'

You thought they got it right in the end. I might even agree with you, though I haven't really reviewed the race.

The manner is in how they did it. If the judges ruled three times that Grunewald was not deserving of a DQ, they did not believe she deserved to be DQed.

Nike steps in, and suddenly the decision is reversed.

Just because the correct decision has been reached in the end does not mean the process by which the result was arrived at was ethical. If this is allowed to happen unnoticed and unchallenged, it opens the door for these things to happen in the future in situations where the correct decision is not reached.

Do you really think it is an acceptable thing for corporations to step in and strong-arm there way into attempting to change the results of the race?

In no way should Gabe have been DQ'd in that race. Did YOU watch it?

I've just been thinking of the same thing. The JH/GG crash is somewhat like the MD/ZB incident. In similar positions, with MD moving forward just as ZB begins moving towards the rail. Most if not all the blame was put on Decker, as she was running from behind and didn't do anything to protect her position. ZB, for the most part, was excused from blame because she was in the lead and could not see where MD was.

It is interesting to see more people defend GG on these boards than would ever stick up for Decker. Affirms in my mind that people laid more blame on Decker because of how she behaved AFTER the race, and not necessarily for what she did during it. I've often thought that Zola should have received more blame than she did for the contact with MD. She had just passed Decker, giving her some idea of where MD was, and after the first contact, should have known that it wasn't safe to move in. JH had fronted GG for quite some time, but I suspect JH knew GG was just behind her. With only a lap or so to go, you have to know people are going to start to kick. And after that slow pace, the dash for home has the potential to be frenzied. If you are up front and dying, you are going to really be in the way.

With that said, officials made the right call in 1984 by lifting DQ against Budd. Officials should likewise lift the DQ against GG. Contact sometimes just happens, especially on an indoor track. This wasn't a purposeful shove, it was a clip of the heels. These are two moving beings not of like minds who can speed up or slow down at any given moment. They're not equipped with blinkers and brake lights. When the person in front slows down and moves towards the rail just at the time the person behind picks up the pace, contact is going to happen.

It is unfortunate that this has become such a personal issue between racers, shoe companies and dysfunctional decision making. GG looked very strong and should have won the race, no disagreement. But the fact of the matter this is not the first time that GG has been embroiled in a very controversial decision:

And as another elite (non-American) 1500m runner, I will agree that even when it does not become so public and controversial, racing against GG is a train wreck. She is overly aggressive and has no respect for people's position - she pushes her way through people in packs and should have swung wide going around JH. Anyone thinking that she was "sitting" behind JH with less than a lap to go and got cut off needs to give their head a shake. Why would she sit behind Jordan in the final lap? Trying to pass on the inside is NOT a safe way to pass and is very risky. The runner in the lead has right of way to protect their position. GG doesn't put herself in the right position and runs into people and then acts like the victim (BTW the cancer thing is laudable but completely irrelevant to this case).

Regardless of this particular outcome, GG needs to learn to actually race because she knows how to run fast and has potential to be a world contender.
