In 1981 I served with a fellow Marine who held the USMC record for the three mile run. I don't remember his exact time, but I believe it was around 13:15 give or take 30 seconds. His name was pronounce "Street" but the spelling may have been different. I was fast, but nothing compared to him. His running was a thing of beauty. He was from Florida; skinny kid, dark hair. He was in the parachute rigger school.
Now, even though I'm 63 I know that you can't post anything on the internet without a bunch of negativity, so all I can do is promise I'm telling the truth as I remember it. If you wish to do your own research you can track down the commanding officer of the small detachment we were assigned to. We were a very small detachment on what was then Ft. Lee, VA. Yes, I know it's not a small detachment anymore, but in 1981 we had only about 30 Marines there. The CO was Edmund H. Lawrence. After retirement, about 1987, he was an attorney in Richmond, VA (I believe) and I think he later moved to Oklahoma. I believe he's still alive. You can try to find him, write him a letter, and verify what I'm saying.

I was in an Army OCS class in 1982, where an SF guy ran sub 10 for two miles on that twisty dirt track across the road from the Iron Mike statue.
we had guys in hs you joined the marines and came back with in another non marines uniform. strange.
The sergeants let you choose another branch after a week or so.

SOF guys are a different breed. My brother was a SEAL in the middle of the GWOT (2004-2014- medically retired); and even though we’re blood, he’s just on a completely different level. He wrestled and swam growing up, and I did xc and track. We’re both 5’10, but he’s 185 of just muscle and I’m a scrawny 148.
Anyway, my point being, when we are back at our parents house with our own families for holidays, he has zero problem jumping in an 8 or 10 miler morning run at 7:30 pace with me. Three years ago, I was fishing/spearfishing in The Keys with him and two of his old teammates. The fishing was slow, and we were about 3 miles from shore. He and his buddies got bored, put on their fins and mask, jumped over the side, and said they were going to swim back to shore. The fishing guide was like, “what the eff?!” Just a different breed of person. The stories he has shared with me from his Buds training and being in country are pretty wild. If I didn’t know my brother, I wouldn’t believe them.
James Clapper, CIA Director, did that. He joined the Marinies and ended up choosing the Coast Guard.
