If he was running in NJ, he wouldn't have quadrupled. The only relevance his 16 and 32 times from this meet have to any discussion of his ability is that they were enough to win those events and they're decent.

Even though I am a big Hartle fan, I would agree that this tripple is more impressive...but I still think Hartle is going to be a pro as long as UCLA doesn't destroy him, but I do worry. I feel that Primm should have been much, much better. Maybe I didn't pay close enough attention, but I thought Primm took a couple of steps backwards his Frosh and Soph years, but maybe he was injured or something or my expectations were too high.

I think he'd have a very good chance in the 800 or 1600, but I don't think it's out of question to wonder if he wouldn't win any of them.

Hartle and Malone have similar mile times (4:10.23 vs. 4:12.52y). They also have similar 800 times (1:49.91 vs. 1:49.94). And then there is Stephen Lewandowski (4:10.17), Allen Eke (4:11.69), and Tim Ball (4:11.91) to deal with in the mile as well. For the 3200, he'd have a real tough time with guys like Tim Ball (9:06.67), Jon Harper (9:12.44), Tim Rooney (9:11.53), Jake Riff (9:11.87), Jack Boyle (9:12.92), Aaron Libertore (9:13.18), and Dylan Tarpey (9:13.23). Yes, he might have run his times at altitude and he hasn't been focusing on the 3200, but guys like Tim Ball, George Kelly, Jack Leahy, and maybe Blake Udland or Ben Malone or Tyler Gibbons were as good or better in cross as well.

If I was a betting man, I'd say Hartle would win NJ state in the 800. And he'd be a co-favorite or probably the favorite in the 1600 if he was focusing more on it. But I wouldn't bet on him to win the 400 or 3200.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that if he lived in an area like NJ, he wouldn't make an attempt at 4 titles in the state meet. He made an attempt because he knew he could do it. I too, think that he would likely have just tried the 8/16, or 4/8, if he lived in an area much more permeated with talent.

I keep seeing that his best events are the 800 and the 1600/1500. I don't believe we have enough information to say that yet. That is a good 5000 time for a high school kid. I don't think I've seen anything about his training and am not ready to discount the 3000/5000 with proper training as his best events in the future. That being said, I am not taking anyone to task on this, only pointing out what I perceive as a general sentiment based on current PB times. However, he seems to have very good endurance along with great leg speed. With the right training program, he might be every bit as good as Galen Rupp at longer distances.

Let me quote the legendary Ron Clarke, who is referring to Australia's most prodigious female junior talent ever, Georgie Clarke (a very distant relative). She made the semifinals at Sydney 2000 Olympic, aged 16. Her fastest 800m is 2:01.73, and 2nd fastest 1500 is 4:06.77, both at 16yo. She won the World Youth 800m. Big deal.

"She understands there's no use being a junior champion and there's no use being the best in Australia. You've got to be best in the world."

Unfortunately, it was the start of years of injuries, heartache, and frustration. When will the retards in charge of junior middle distance (indeed athletics and sport in general) understand that flogging the bejesus out of a few phenoms looks spectacular for a while, but turns to shit in the vast majority of cases. Even those who survive the system and do well, could probably have done a lot better with a more balanced and sensible progression, with attention to steady aerobic development, proper core strength (not frigging crunches, planks, and other nonsense), general strength and athleticism instead of brutal rep sessions. I wish Gabrielle Jennings all the luck in the world-she's gonna need it.

So who was more impressive at their state meet?

Nick Hartle last week did an impressive two day quad that has had his family and friends on this board pumping him up and posting about him ever since.

He ran times of 1,600 meters in 4:18.03 (at 4,500 feet elevation

50 minutes later turned the 400 in a track record 47.79

On Saturday, Hartle ran 1:52.53 to take the 800 and

9:28.27 in the 3,200

But our international friend who is only a junior in the SAME DAY went

800-1:49.98R

1600-4:11.35

3200-9:03.51

Dickson running the quad this weekend. Didn't make it in time to see what he split was in the 4x4 prelims, but he was second in the 3200 (9:04.91) an hour after his 4x4... over/under on his quad matching Hartle's feat (in levels of performance, since he already lost a race to due to better competition)?

This is less impressive when you consider the fact that the Kenyans each appear to have been about 6 years old when that race was recorded.

As usual, a genuinely once-in-a-generation runner and WR holder is used as the exception to prove the 'rule' that exceptional juniors are destined for great things. I could mention Herb Elliot as well.

it was at 4500ft of elevation. Converts down to a 9:12 and the 3200 was on the backend of the weekend.
