On April 1st this would be hilarious, today its just damn insulting to fans. I really don't like that it seems so orchestrated, with letsrun seeming to be in on it.
Like other people said I don't think there is a sport which would show so much disrespect to its fans, which is pretty sad.
While this may seem humorous to the folks at Nike and Webb and Teg it really is lame. As another poster pointed out our top guys only race 8-12 times per year and Webb has been out so alot of us were eager to see how he would do. As someone who has followed and supported Webb since his high school years I have to say that this was very insulting to those of us who were looking forward to his race and him doing well. I can't speak for anyone else but as far as I am concerned - Webb you can go f**k yourself and I hope you continue to flame out. This kind of childish behaviour can be expected out of a group of immature, spoiled, over-indulgent rich kids like the NBA but from a running community that is by and large educated this is simply insulting to the few fans who have been trying to support you. Anyone that fell for the Teg and Webb videos is a fool. This board disected the videos at the time and got the joke. If you feel insulted by Teg or Webb or by the race organizers it is because you are simply a fool.
It was great of Teg and Webb to help the race organizers with the videos. With the reactions here, though, you won't see the elites engaging the regular folk very much any more.

What was plausible at all about Webb's video?
1. He doesn't have a desk at Nike.
2. He doesn't speak on a desktop phone.
3. He doesn't run the 5k
4. He doesn't run road races.
5. He doesn't tell his coach where and when he will race.
6. He's checking a sheet of notes.
7. Nike doesn't have HD surveillance cameras aimed at Webb's desk that doesn't exist.
These 7 reasons set up the humor. Anyone knowledgable if running would know that this was rouse and ghat it was so preposterous that it wad funny.

Yes, we all knew it was acting and not a real phone call. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. That shouldn't have made us believe he wasn't really going to race. As for him not running the 5km... I'd say his 13.10 disagrees. As for him not running road races... it was his comeback after a long lay off. Running a low key road race seems logical. Now please try answering the question again. Nothing you have said gives a good reason for us to believe he wasn't actually going to race. I for one thought this was a fun way of letting the fans know when he would be returning. You might not know this but we have been waiting a long time. If the video was just made to advertise the race and Webb never planned on racing it he is an absolute wanker.

Notice how people claim they knew it was a joke all along but not a single poster said as much on the prediction thread.
It was obvious the videos were made to be humorous but most of us clearly thought they would still be racing.
After sleeping on this, I have a few remarks.
The videos announcing their participation was done in a joking manner, but I still believed in the probability of a nike athlete racing. I wasted 90 minutes of my life last night waiting on results for a local road race. I'm still a fan of Alan Webb but I feel insulted.

Teg, Webb, or Al Sal could of thrown us a bone at 10:30 EST. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I was checking twitter accounts.
I just want an explaination from the horse's mouth to why this was done. Promoting a local road race? Publicity stunt by nike? Promoting a running club? Or, legitimate issues which forced Webb/Teg to back-out (which I pray is the case).

Which brings us back to f*ckin' with the fans. Not cool for pros to look down on those who aren't "knowledgable if running." Not that they were, but since that's what you are suggesting it's worth pointing out again that contempt for those who might want to support you despite having only a casual interest is not the way to a successful career.
