Fernandez could'nt hold a torch to Ryan Gregson

Here's a quote from Ryan Gregson the day after running 3:37 for the 1500m in Sydney, Australia. He's referring to the upcoming world cross country championships.

"The American juniors are great – there's one who is better than me over 8km and two who are about the same. If we can run together we can try to tackle the Kenyans,” he explained.

So let's stop raving on about who is better than who, and work together to beat the Africans!

Gregson and Fernandez are obviously both incredible talents and they'll settle all the debates in races.

That being said, while the conversions are comparable (1.08 factor), Fernandez's 3:55 all alone on an indoor track is far better (and he doubled!) than Gregson's 3:37 outdoors drafting off of faster guys. Moreover, the 1.08 factor doesn't even cover the psychological factor that leads a lot of guys to never match their 1500m "equivalent" times in the mile, given opportunities. Willis, Lukezic, and many others have had good shots at fast miles, and never (maybe Willis did it last year) run anywhere near their 1500m equivalent. Fernandez is also training in winter, whereas Gregson is training in the Australian summer. The point is that Fernandez will get substantially faster when the good spring weather kicks in. It's not out of the realm of possibility that he will run 3:50 equivalent outdoors and sub-7:40 3k, particularly if he goes to Europe this year. Gregson's run 14:14 5k. Fernandez will get 13:15 this year.

Yeah, I saw that on the link from TafNews. Gregson's other remarks were interesting, as to training like a 10k runner most of the year, etc. Sounds like Steve Scott and shades of Lydiard. It would be great to see him run with our guys and see how'd they do teaming up like the Africans who really do run as teams. Of course, our guys being teens and Gregson being a teen will be racing some over-age guys, but I'm sure they're aware of it.

I've tried to find a bit of info regarding the training of Gregson and Fernandez - mainly for my own curiosity. I think I read that Fernandez doesn't put too much emphasis on speed at the expense of endurance, but I may be wrong. Gregson is coached by Ian Hatfield, but I've been unable to find much in reference to his training philosophy. Do you have any info?

Milesmakechampions: I may be wrong, but Ian Hatfield is good friends with my coach Tom Kelly. They both have similar methods. Year round five pace plan as set out by Frank Horwill with emphasis on aerobic development in winter, lactic in summer etc. Top end speed is maintained year round with regular strides and hill work. Obviously more credence is given to speed in racing season but I won't speak too much more on things I don't truly don't have knowledge of.

Thanks "Doncaster Track Club". From what I've read Horwill's 5 pace plan is fairly similar to Peter Coe's approach. Is that right?

13:56 is a poor effort based on his 1500m (equal to a 13:30), clearly his strength is lacking.

Not going to be fast enough to beat German at a cross race, that is for sure. His 3K was worth a 13:34 and he was not even feeling 100% for that. Don't forget the fact that he has not lost this indoor season. Looks like Gregson should stick to the 1500m, where he has a chance.

you have it right i think...

Both are obviously great runners but fernandez has ran a little faster with the exception for gregsons 3:54 recently at sydney. However, fernandez was right there with his 3:55. the only difference. Fernandez was solo(won by 10 sec). Gregson didn't even win his race.

Well he sure showed it last night.

I mean props to him and his 3:37 but come World Cross and he is not going to match up with any of the big boys if he runs like he did last night.
