I was just reading about this Dave Grohl guy actually by coincidence and remembered this thread. The article said he doesn't know how to read music and taught himself the guitar and drums without lessons. He actually learned how to play the drums by setting up stuff from around the house to look like a drum set and then just trying to imitate music he heard. Modern day musical genius it sounds like.

This is quite likely the best line ever in a "break-up" song.

Idiot Wind, by bob
Had to sing a few lines in my head to get it, but I didn't need to look it up like I thought I might.
Best:
"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."
"Hello it's me. I'm not at home. If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone."
"In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade; and he carries the reminder of every glove that laid him down and cut him til he cried out in his anger and his shame--I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains..."
"Don't remind me of my failures, I have not forgotten them."
"I've been tryin' to get down to the heart of the matter, but my will gets weak and my thoughts seem to scatter; but I'm thinking about forgiveness, forgiveness, even if you don't love me anymore."
"The road goes on forever, and the party never ends."
Worst:
"My Bel ami"
"Summer Rain"
"Jam Up and Jelly Tight"
"And I can't fight this feeling anymore I've forgotten what I started fighting for.. It's time to bring this ship into the shore And throw away the oars forever!"
"Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose" - Janis Joplin, Me and Bobby McGee
For some reason I find this lyric profound
Bad has been very well covered. I read entire thread, agree with Foo Fighters being great. Agree Roxy Music is solid, Simple Minds pretty good too from same era.
Nobody mentioned Nine inch Nail; Johnny Cash did a great cover of this:
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Yes! Brand New, seriously EVERYTHING by Jesse Lacey is brilliant lyrically.
Bizarre Love Triangle- New Order
Many of the big ac/DC hits are surprisingly solid for their genre.
Skynard- Gimme three steps- shallow yet perfect.
I'm sure Dylan is great writer but I only want to hack my ears off when I hear his voice so, yeah.
worst: every Nickelback lyric
best: another vote for Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees"
Hello!
