So does that mean it was the equivalent of running 4:14 miles at sea level? Cuz if it was a true mile that would be more like a 4:03 mile at 7500'. 4:14 is still excessively impressive.

If Virgin's W-L record against the two guys in question has more W's than L's then he's by far the better runner. The W-L record should be weighted for championship races (double points for World Cross and Olympics).

I think after training through the winter in Alamosa, you can only be so strong mentally for a while and then you eventually get to where it's just nice to relax and go for a run in the summer without having to snow suit up. You realize it's been a long year somewhere around May or June and you just want to kick back and go for some easy runs. You really have to work hard mentally in the winter to deal with the crappy weather day in and out. By the time fall rolls around, you're ready to go again.

Pat's approach in cross-country races reminded me a little of Johnny Gray's approach in 800-meter races -- go out really fast and see if anyone can catch you. Physiologically, it didn't seem like the soundest approach, but it seemed to work very well for Pat most of the time at the national level. At the international level, it obviously didn't get him the same results, but I'm not sure that he could have ever beaten someone like Lopes at his peak. Pat had a beautiful running stride -- he ran like a thoroughbred -- but I don't remember ever seeing him shift into that extra gear that other top runners seemed to have at the end of a race.
