I agree wholeheartedly about over-racing distance kids for points. I believe that is part of the reason we don't see national caliber times in the distance events in Kansas kids. 20 yrs ago, we could only race 2 distances at 800 or over in a meet. I think that helped the quality of times.
I also believe there was not near as much competition for those kids with other sports. I guess I'm glad we give kids the opportunity to play baseball, tennis, golf, soccer and any other spring sports. We didn't use to have those sports competing against the sport of track, as most schools in our area only offered 2 spring sports.
I had a female cousin who won the state meet by herself by winning 3 events--800, 1600 and 200. They wouldn't allow her to run the 3200 or 400 as that would have been too many distance events.
