I was responding to a poster who claims that a run that was nearly 4 seconds slower is somehow greater.
There is a lot more to determining quality of performances than simply time. Jesse Owens's lifetime best was 10.20. 257 men ran faster than that in 2025 alone. None of their performances were superior to Owen's. But you must believe that all of their performances were superior.
Valby ran a completely solo second 5K in 15:20 at a time when only 11 women in NCAA history had run 15:17 or faster for just the 5K alone. Her second 5K would have won all but three NCAA championships ever held. And she did it with no help from anyone. If you think it is as easy to break a national record solo as it us when you are pushed step for step for an entire race, then you clearly have never run a race before. Hedengren and Kosgei shared the pacing duties the entire race.
Hedengren easily had the vest performance ever by a freshman, but it was not better than Valby. Her day will come eventually but not quite yet.
