And that's exactly the correct approach. It would be senseless to throw away her greatest strength by going out slowly. If you are going to fade late anyway, bank the time early.
Eventually Meuwly will want even faster pacers for her. This is going to shift the dynamic of women's 800 races on the circuit. Everyone will have to get accustomed to swifter opening laps.
Regardless, Bol will now receive far less attention tomorrow in the Netherlands, after the absolute debacle by Joy Beune and other Dutch female skaters in the Olympic 3000 today. Bol could run 2:15 and it wouldn't be a comparative blip. Pressure now on Femke Kok and others.
No such thing as "banking time" in the 800. You run too fast the first lap, you crash and burn on the second lap.
Well, most fast 800s are run with positive splits......
Something to bear in mind...coach Meuwly stated a while ago he has no qualms about Bol Q for the European Champs, however the Ultimate Champs would be more difficult as it's top 16 in the world. I am assuming WA are doing this based on their own world ranking score, not times. If so, Bol needs 5 good meet rankings.
Metz is a World silver meet whilst Lievin is gold. And the 600m counts towards 800m ranking points. If she lays a decent mark in Metz, and gets near (or even breaks?) the 600m best, this is already two valuable meeting points in the bank for her. She will have no problem getting into summer meets, but at least with these two indoors meets she's set herself up well before the summer season.
Re the Dutch press attention being diverted to the Winter Olympics, yes, but there's absolutely no doubt they will be looking at Bol today.
Joy Beune was not favourite for gold in the 3000m, so no shock she came 4th. Leerdam faces the pressure tomorrow as favourite for the 1000m. The 500m - and the hype for Femke Kok - isn't for a few days. Regardless, there's enough international press attention on Bol today anyway.
Renowned statistician and coach PJ Vazel posted he thinks Bol will run 1:57.9 today, based on splits asked and his conversation with Meuwly.
In her debut??? I doubt she'll ever run that fast. 1:57 ceiling
Words of Wisdom:
Never predict the future.
For, when future becomes past, you may find yourself stuck in the present . . . and being judged a blithering idiot.
Disagree. I'd rather be proven wrong than be someone too afraid to make a prediction.
Saying Bol has a 1:57 ceiling isn't an insult. 1:57 is an excellent time. The current United States Champion has never broken 1:57. She just barely broke 1:58 for the first time in her career this season! Yet people here predict Bol will break 1:57 in her debut like it's nothing?
Rather than gang up on me, consider how hard it is for a woman to run 1:57, and show more respect to the event.
The youtube stream has no audio and the european-athletics stream isn't working at all at least for me - I get the error "Obviously, and predictably, something went wrong, try again later") and I'm not in a geo blocked country.
So silent 144p with no on-screen timer it is then unless anyone has something better?
Oh, and the youtube stream does have audio because it suddenly turned on for 15 seconds a few minutes ago and then went again. They've just decided to keep it off most of the time.
