In today's debate, a distance runner who can run 3:40, is well equipped to run 7:45/13:10/27:20. Different era, different times, different shoes (minimalist at the time). I still remember those Tiger Onitsuka plimsolls which offered minimal cushioning. Runners today would laugh and refuse to wear such shoes . An aberration?
We can only conjecture what might have been.
You have some valid speculation but you have to understand my history. I ran 3:42/8:22sc in college. I was 21, but I looked like I was 17, so I had a lot of upside potential. Back then there was no such thing as "professional" so if you wanted to continue to compete you had find a way. It just happened that Nike created Athletics West the fall after I graduated 1977 and Virgin and I were among the first fully paid professional track athletes. The problem was that they hired a diabolical madman for a coach who didn't know WTF he was doing. I ran 3:40/8:21 that year. It was an epic failure for me. It was not even close to my expectations. So, along with Craig Virgin, I quit. Without the Nike financial support it became an old skool struggle, but at least I was free.
