Hot take. Iowa prep freshmen are running faster at Wartburg than anywhere else in Iowa right now. Decker 407.6, Zaugg 4:09.8, Smith 412.2, Warson 416.4. It's not just D1 or bust out there. I hope to see some more blue chip Iowans go get good and take the development piece seriously. If you hear about any of these top kids choosing Wartburg, don't be surprised. That's where runners are legit locked regarding distance running.
Yes, Merrick and Decker looked very good, way under meet record
Merrick and Decker had incredible runs. Merrick led wire to wire, Decker sat on him wire to wire. Seems both had the goal of running fast. U.S #11 for Merrick and a top 20 for Decker.
Nauman was fastest sophomore Iowa 3200 runner in history. Almost certain that Decker will surpass him. Heidesch was fastest junior 1600. Almost certain that Ten Pas will surpass him. If those 2 progress at the same rate as their predecessors, they will end up ad the fastest ever. And don't count Nauman out. I assume that he will run 8:50 by the end of the day.

Think everyone forgets where kids are in their training, this is just my opinion but Decker has been doing speed work for awhile and been to multiple races already, Naumen has been doing speed work for awhile getting ready for nationals, Merrick has not started speed work yet so has a lot of gains to be made still and I feel that’s the same for zuber. If you watched Merrick yesterday he’s sub 9 already if needed. Everyone forgets he dropped a 8:55 last year right behind Naumens 8:54! If weather is good for Drake it will take a sub 9 to be top 7-8 and sub 8:50 to win. 1600 will take sub 4:10 for top 5-6. All these Iowa kids are crushing it and we should be cheering for all of them.
