Hey- I'm running Meriter tonight and, whoever you are, for your support I owe undying gratitude. I might be at the laurel afterwards. If you show up, I'll buy you a beer.
As for the source of misguided whatever, there're several. One comes from the rotten-to-the-core UWO. You must have heard how the former UWO coach was fired, and how the assistants backed him up? I sure didn't support him. Those guys- Zupanc and Ackerman and Vercauteren- are resume-padders. They refuse to list my 1500m record. Go ahead and check the UWO Track Records. You won't see an outdoor 1500. That's how much Zupanc hates me. It's so sad- UWO is the only WSUC school- and the only NCAA school I've noticed- that doesn't list an outdoor 1500m record. Pathetic. Talk about running time lies- I'd say UWO not listing a 1500m record is a pretty big lie-by-omission.
I'd also say that UWO failing to break a 24 year old, fairly slow, 1500m record is, well, pathetic. 3:47.88 must be one of the slowest NCAA Division III records in the country. It's also got to be one of the oldest 1500m records in the country if you look at programs with active and competetive track teams.
The other problem that I know of comes from my previously-less-than-favorable image of the former UW CC coach. We were on speaking terms towards the end of his tenure here, but for a while in the late 80s, there were two groups of runners here. One group ran with the CC coach, and the other group did not. The UW runners who left weren't around for the reconciliation, and they still carry the baggage of hatred. I think it's sad- some of them are actually pretty decent human beings, and some of them were good runners. I think Martin has proven himself to be a good man and a fine coach- and I think it's ok to get over some things.
Finally, I get a total kick out of winning and I'm not afraid to dominate when I can. There are some younger guys who can't handle defeat- especially when it comes at the hands of an old guy like me! So there you have it- my side of the story. At least there you have some of it. More available at the laurel later. Over beer.
