She only made $50K as Director of rack & Field and Cross Country at a major university?

Where is it listed that her salary was only $50K? Most private institutions don't publish their salary database.

I highly doubt she only made 50k...assistant coaching position was listed at 55k...

I can also confirm that she was not pushed out. Her husband got a great opportunity in another city and they made a family decision. SMU is a unique school and I think Cathy did a good job with the situation there.

How is SMU "unique" and how is coaching there any different than any other University?

Well, considering that it's nearly $60k (or more) to go to school there and they are not in a great training location (Dallas, TX)...it's a unique situation. Very hard to compete with in-state schools with recruiting as they are cheaper. For example, a 50% scholarship for a local Texas girl would still make SMU more expensive than walking on at Texas A&M, etc.

It's also seems to fill a student body that is very preppy and attracts a very niche student-body.

WTF does this mean? I'm fairly certain there have been some high-level athletes make their home and train in Dallas and Fort Worth.

Very different. The schools you mentioned...Duke, Stanford, Miami and Notre Dame are in Power 5 conferences, which means the athletic departments have much more $$$ than the mid majors due to lucrative football and basketball TV broadcast deals. In SMU's case, they used to be a football and track & field powerhouse in the defunct Southwest Conference (Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Rice, TCU, Houston, Texas A&M and Arkansas). The SWC was the premier conference for sprints long before the SEC in the 70's, 80's and 90's until it was dissolved. In addition, SMU was the only football program to receive the "Death Penalty" for repeated NCAA violations of it football program. The athletic department never recovered and has been in mid major conferences since. Their situation is different.

Duke...awesome location to train. World-renown for it's basketball program. For an 18 year old high school student, that's a big deal.

Stanford...awesome location to train; prestigious academic institution. Huge tradition in XC and Track and Field. Typically the #1 or #2 program combined every year.

Miami...name the last distance runner that did something there?

Notre Dame...again, world-renown for it's athletics programs...

Ivies...some are very good...but prestigious academic institutions.

I don't think SMU is very similar to those schools at all...thus, unique.

SMU was loaded in the throws and some other field events for 20+ years 1990's into early 2010's! Very successful program for many years
