I have heard the rumors and off the wall comments, but looking at that job posting it is a clear indication that the athletic department doesn't have strong leadership nor do they have a clear vision. You don't need interim. Trust me that young lady is probably happy to be leaving. They just need to focus on distance and move on.
Devin West is a great guy. He has moved job to job because of folks seeking him out as a phenomenal recruiter, following opportunity, and family life that has drawn him in different places. Not because he has been let go. He has an ability to build relationships and connect with recruits and their families. Let’s be honest, recruiting is the building block to any big time program. Not many want to dedicate the effort to it in the way he does. He is a great coach as well, but recruiting is a skill he has that many do not have. As someone who has worked with him, I can say he truly cares about the athletes and it shines through in his recruiting and coaching. Say what you want, but he is a great coach and even better person. #FindDWestHisNextJob
They will be announcing their decisions soon. Buddy of mine applied and got their application passed on to the hiring manager only to be told they had made their decision weeks ago. Hopefully they make a decent choice, cuz they're passing over some highly qualified candidates.
They won’t make a good choice , you’ll see
So who's their new coach taking? Was it a formality posting from the start?
Interim? Won't that turn off interested applicants? Feels like another Dartmouth misstep.
You read the article and then see the interim title and think, wow, this is a trainwreck.
The Director is still on their website. They have a women's xc/distance coach, but list the Director position as a distance position, but don't specify just distance men. It sounds like horrible lack of leadership from the Administration through the program itself. On top of it all t's possible the athletes are entitled know-it-all's. WIth them getting at least one coach fired, that doesn't bode well, again, especially for an Interim head coach.
I would say they aren't going to get strong applicants, but it sounds like they may not care, and may actually prefer weaker candidates that are compliant and/or disposable.
From 2022-23, the men’s cross country roster shrunk from 24 to 15 runners. The Dartmouth interviewed former team members and a parent of a former team member to find out why.
It’s a common theme on here to think everyone speaks so highly of themselves when we see these posts. Instead of believing that their peers in the industry are the ones speaking up and giving them credit. Your comment alone tells me you have not met the man nor do you have a place in college coaching.
Unlike majority of track coaches in NCAA. So many head coaches are like Jerry Jones in that they pick ppl for positions just bc it’s the opposite of what makes sense. As everyone has said time and time again, they just recycle
Facts... There are a lot of brats in that program. The athletic leadership wants someone who will bend over backwards to make them happy.
Sounds like a combination of the Director just not caring about XC and in turn making extremely poor hires (which led to the stress fractures) and the kids being entitled.
If you have a Director that's going to shift focus off distance to sprints then the distance team is obviously going to have negative feelings towards the school and her.
Having been in a handful of director roles I think it's important to look at what's worked for the program and build around that but people have had success completely shifting the resources and focus to another event.

Another addition to the list
Lmao whoops, I already said this. I was on autopilot this morning. Sorry

I find it funny that the director at an Ivy decided to focus off distance to focus on sprints.
It's an Ivy, they don't give scholarships, so why would you focus on one specific area or neglect any area. Not to mention, at an Ivy, with high academic recruiting, why would you ever neglect distance. Distance and throws are usually the highest academic event areas.

The best recruiters don’t have to only focus on certain events. Especially at an Ivy without scholarships, I’m trying to get the best distance runners, mid-distance, throws, jumps and sprints. Now as far as roster numbers for these event groups of course some are going to be denser than others, but that still doesn’t mean you can have a solid throws group or sprints/jumps group. You get out what you put in.
It’s clear that the director was not ready for that position. The director is to blame for all of it because she was the director. She made the hires and allowed this stuff to happen. Not sure why the director was not the one giving the zoom calls to let the team know the coach was let go. That’s the directors job.
