Trump is not running for any office in the mid-terms so the tradition you describe is not applicable in this case.
I think it's very applicable. The DOJ tries not to interfere in politics if possible. And Trump's crimes are definitely an issue in the midterms.
That's why I think Trump won't be indicted until after the midterms are over.
He doesn’t have a family member running for office so why would he be given a free pass until after the mid-terms? If some candidates have hitched their wagons to Trump, then it’s a choice they have to live with.
Root beer? Jesus Christ, man. You never admit that. You say you were drinking Pabst or Schlitz or something, even if you were drinking a root beer.
Look at this clown, Igster. She thinks the rat was Ivanka. There is no goddam way it was Ivanka. It was that goddam fink Giuliani, or it was a disgruntled Secret Service agent.
Between his staff and the secret service, there are at least a hundred people it could have been. Trump might also have bragged about having the documents to the wrong club member.
It's possible. Guy Reffitt's son ratted on him. Even wore a Fed wire, that ungrateful little punk. When Reffitt gets out of prison, he needs to slap the snot out of that little creep. Just grab him by the neck, backhand him upside the face and quote some Biblical stuff about honoring thy father, etc. "La familia es todo, pequeño bastardo!"
He is crazy to think it was Melania. You and I both know it was likely Giuliani that ratted on Trump. Giuliani had the motive (food thrown in his face; unpaid legal bills) and the means (fax machine, word processor, address of contacts as DOJ). I can see Giuliani being drunk one night, feeling like he's all handsome and bulletproof, and then he just types up some letter with wild tales of stolen, classified documents stored in bathrooms and closets at the Trump compound and faxes it over to the Feds.
Other than revenge, what would Drunk Rudy get out of the deal? If it's immunity from prosecution, I might bite on that theory. But he's probably got a blanket pardon anyway.
It's not enough motive for me to be convinced. Melania has a lot more to gain.
Immunity from prosecution is not in play here. This was just a garden-variety rat job.
Revenge is a powerful motivating factor, third only to money and sex. People will go to great lengths to exact revenge. And Giuliani has plenty of resentments built up. Trump has treated him like swill and garbage for years, culminating in the election day humiliation with the food. Who amongst us would not be vengeful over that?

Again, an Attorney General would have to insane to trust anything Giuliani told him.
Giuliani is responsible for both of Trump’s impeachments and now he’s going to put him in prison? It’s Trump that should have extracted revenge.

What in the name of J. Christ are you even talking about? You confuse some many things, it's difficult to respond.
It's not a matter of trust. You have a witness in the Trump compound who says that, despite previous declarations, there are still classified documents here. Of course that AG is going to listen to that, no matter how much he doesn't trust the witness. The AG will press and ask for details to try and see how knowledgeable the witness is, but they sure as hell aren't going to ignore it just because it's Giuliani as opposed to any other rat finking goddam snitch.
This has zip to do with "Giuliani is responsible for both of Trump’s impeachments and now he’s going to put him in prison" whatever the hell that even means. What the hell does that even mean? And WTF does any of that have to do with Giuliani's motive for ratting on Trump? Giuliani had plenty of reasons to turn and rat on Trump, and they have been rigorously cataloged in this thread.

I happen to think the rat finking goddam snitch is a good guy and a true patriot.
It’s still ridiculous to think it was Giuliani. He has never been anything other than loyal to Trump. I’m about 100% sure that if the RFGS is ever identified, it will be someone we’ve never heard of.
if trump deliberately gave his lawyer false info to hand over to the DOJ (that is, the false claim that trump had handed over all classified documents) then trump is guilty of yet another federal crime.
so many crimes.
Now Trump is trying to commit some mob boss-style extortion of the justice department.
Trump had an intermediary send a message to a Justice Department official to send to Garland, including that he'd heard people around the country are upset with the search. “The country is on fire,” was the message. “What can I do to reduce the heat?”

Probably tough to prove that one. I'm sure there is no paper trail regarding what Trump told his attorney.
Don't you think that the declaration that Trump has handed over all the material would be signed by Trump himself? I don't think the government would just take the attorney's word for it.
That's not how it works. Attorneys handle all such matters once they turn legal. And attorneys are officers of the court, so the government will absolutely accept any registered attorneys' declaration as truthful.
The attorney who submitted that declaration has got to be in the bathroom puking up clam sauce or whatever s/he had for lunch, because they got lied to by their client (Trump) and now have to face severe scrutiny for a possible false declaration. I'm sure they can plead/argue that they were mistaken, but it looks terrible.
If that's what happened, the government made a big mistake. And so did Trump's attorney.

I agree, but I don't think the DOJ sees it that way.

Forget the snitch for now. We need to know what the hell this "Giuliani is responsible for both of Trump’s impeachments and now he’s going to put him in prison?" means and what you are driving at.
Assuming that "Giuliani is responsible for both of Trump’s impeachments," whatever the hell that implausible statement means, is true, wouldn't that make it MORE likely that Giuliani would do something like dropping the dime on Trump and "put him in prison"? I mean what the hell were you trying to refute with this nonsensical statement? Explain yourself.

It is what happened. And it's not absolutely not a mistake for the government to rely on the representations of licensed attorneys. That happens in government and business tens of thousands of times a day. There is no other practical way to conduct transactions and affairs in America.

From the article I saw, this is reporting from unnamed sources. We can't be sure it's accurate.
There is a perfectly practical way to make sure Trump wasn't just fooling his attorney. You have Trump sign a statement witnessed by his attorney.
Obviously, that's what the government should have done if they only relied on the word of the attorney.

Giuliani has an irrational hatred of Biden and his fingerprints were all over the phone call with the Ukraine president. Telling Trump to reject the election results was horrible legal advice and egging Trump on with all the fraud accusations was even worse. As crazy as Giuliani is, he must feel some responsibility for the impeachments and I don’t see him now trying to bring Trump down. He would have nothing to gain from it and like Trump, the walls are closing in on him. If Google his name, you’ll see he is going beserk defending Trump.

Actually, that sounds to me like desperation on Trump's part. He's saying, "Is there anything I can do to make this go away? Please, consider the good of the country."
Revenge is a powerful motivating factor, third only to money and sex.
Right. Money is a more powerful motivator than revenge. Money is why I think it's more likely to be Melania than Drunk Rudy.
It will be fun to find out if we ever do.
Oh, we will find out who this rat is. Trump will spare no means, leave no rock unturned, until this person is outed publicly. And then god help this wretched soul, for Trump will unleash a fishstorm upon them so unsightly as to make one avert their eyes. I don't think people realize just how dangerous the wrath of Trump is. He will wreak a vengeance of Biblical might upon this loathsome snitch, a vengeance so repulsive that even the jackals of hell would turn their noses.
