It is not like Goodridge is being left out in the cold, he likely has a good retirement a a long time state of Michigan employee. But it seems like a lousy but easy way to save money and this is an odd time of year to announce a retirement in this profession. EMU has been good so I can't imagine performance has been a factor in this decsision.
I am sure some AD's are offering retirement buy outs to their higher paid/older staff members. This allows them to hire in people at lower salary levels and save some money, without having to resort to letting anyone go.
