As of Monday, 69 percent of the companies that have reported so far beat estimates, and investors continue to weigh whether company results and comments are good enough to justify record-high stock prices....the beats have more than doubled their long-term average of about 3 percent, according to Thomson Reuters.
Binky Chadha, chief global strategist asset allocation at Deutsche Bank, said earnings are recovering to the point where they should show positive comparisons next quarter and could potentially this quarter if they continue strong enough.

U.S. stock futures struggled for direction on Tuesday, with investors opting for the sidelines ahead of the closely watched Federal Reserve meeting and a deluge of earnings, including updates from McDonald's, Verizon and Apple.
Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 20 points, or 0.1%, at 18,401, while those for the S&P 500 index lost 1.70 point, or about 0.1%, to 2,160. Futures for the Nasdaq-100 index gained 4.50 points, or 0.1%, to 4,658.50.
The muted action follows a downbeat session on Monday, when the S&P 500 index and Dow industrials ended 0.3% and 0.4% lower, respectively.
Investors are wary of making any big moves ahead of an interest-rate decision from the Fed, due on Wednesday. The central bank kicks off its meeting on Tuesday, its first gathering since the U.K. on June 23 voted to leave the European Union.
"The Fed is expected to remain on hold and to deliver a cautious accompanying statement given the rising political and economic risks following the Brexit vote," said Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior market analyst at London Capital Group.
"The expectations of a Fed rate hike by the end of the year have faded to zero. In contrary, the market is pricing in more than 50% chances for an interest rate cut in the U.S. by March 2017," she added.
Meanwhile the earnings deluge continues with some renewed optimism give the overall positive reporting trend to date.
McDonald's "Good" Earnings:
The company reported net income of $1.09 billion, or $1.25 per share (GAAP), on sales of $6.26 billion. Net income included 20 cents in strategic charges, so McDonald's earned $1.45 a share on an adjusted basis (non-GAAP), which is a bit higher than analysts were expecting.
Analysts called for the fast food giant to post earnings of $1.38 a share on revenues of $6.27 billion, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters.
Same-store sales in the U.S. rose 1.8 percent, sharply below analysts' expectations of 3.4 percent growth

Verizon "Good" Earnings:
Second-quarter 2016 EPS of 17 cents compared with $1.04 per share in second-quarter 2015. Adjusted second-quarter 2016 earnings (non-GAAP) of
94 cents per share excluded significant non-operational items related to mark-to-market pension and benefit re-measurements, early debt redemption and tender offers, and a gain from the sale of local landline businesses. Also, earnings were negatively impacted by about 7 cents per share in second-quarter 2016 by a seven-week work stoppage in wireline.
Cat "Better" Outlook for 2016:
The outlook for 2016 that we provided with our first-quarter financial results in April expected sales and revenues in a range of $40 to $42 billion. At the
midpoint of that range, profit was expected to be $3.00 per share, or $3.70 per share excluding restructuring costs. Over the past quarter, economic risks
have persisted and, as a result, our current expectations for 2016 sales and revenues are closer to the bottom end of that outlook range.

2015 Q2 EPS $1.85 versus 2016 Q2 EPS $1.42. Without stock buybacks it would have been a miss on both lowered revenue and EPS.
